Not necessarily. I worked at a pet store in college and it was more how young you got them and how they had been handled up to that point. Some loved to be held and others would bite the crap out of you. Of the dozens that went through the store I worked at, I think maybe 1 or 2 actually left still not like being held. I wouldn't go through Petsmart though, try to find one through a local breeder. It will be cheaper and if you go through a good breeder, it will be healthier.
so the best thing to do is get them really young from a breeder? that makes sense... how much is it to buy one and take care of it? (let's say...monthly. how much would i spend on one monthly?)
I've heard, but not really sure if I believe it, but if you go through a very good breeder, they will only breed "nice" ones with "nice" ones, and it is a theory that temperament is controlled in the genes, so genetically, they will be nicer.

I don't really know what they go for from go breeders. If you are just looking for a standard color, then my guess is $60-100. Price goes up as the color changes and gets more rare.

The initial set up is going to be the most expensive part. Figure around $200 for cage, bowls, and other toys and such for initial set up. Once that is set, I'd guess under $20 a month maybe.
oh wow! that's not bad at all! i would realllly love one of these (hopefully my boyfriend sees this ) the only problem is, i'm living at my parents house right now and they have a dog...not sure they would really wanna share a house together...

we got ours about a week ago, at first he was a bit nervous, but now he comes to the cage door to be let out.

He will let you hold him for a little bit, but he has to much energy and would rather run all over the room, then climb all over you if your laying on the floor.

They sleep all day, and its funny because if you wake him up, he just gives you this look and pushes you away from him with his paws then goes back to sleep

they poop a lot too, but its like hard and dry so its not really that bad

they do bite also, but its like a little nibble, its there way of showing affection

i love him, he makes an awesome pet, and its so funny to watch him take a dust bath

On a side note, Nightglide, that is an awesome pic!

Please please please please don't get your cichlids from Petsmart/Petco. I got mine from this guy because he's local to me, but you should easily be able to find someone to ship if you don't have anyone local. Look at the cichlids on the site I'm linking and compare them to the ones at Petsmart/Petco. It's night and day difference:

http://kurtsaquariums.com/fish.htm

It was also a lot cheaper than buying from a big box pet store. For the 20-25 cichlids I bought (2 inch when I got them), it was right around $100. The only ones I have that can be bought at Petsmart/Petco are my Yellow labs and Frontosas. I paid $5/fish, where you could easily pay $15-30/fish at stores.

Here's some pics of mine:

I have many tanks lol:

1 55 gallon (misc cichlids shown), 1 50 gallon (frontosas), 1 40 gallon (5 Kilesas), 1 35 gallon (wife's misc freshwater), 1 10 gallon (cichlid babies).

I plan on setting up a 220 gallon for the Frontosas once I buy a house this summer. They will get 8-12 inches long and I have 10 of them.

I also want to set up a 24 gallon nanocube with salt water, but also need to wait until I get a house and see if I have time or a place to put it lol.

Shipping fish isn't that bad. If you get them from a good breeder, they will know what to do. It isn't very cheap to do, so I'd recommend trying to find someone local. Look around on www.cichlidforums.com or www.cichlid-forum.com and see if you can find somebody.

Hi everyone,

I decided it's time again for a pet. I really would like a kitty but mom is terrified of them (bad childhood memories) and twin is allergic. Also I would only get a persian one and there would be the hair issue.

So then I thought about a bunny but bunnies kinda stink and I wouldn't want to keep them in a cage cos they like to run in open fields.

So then I thought bout hamsters. But they die soon and I dunno how I would react to that. Then fishes came to mind but I'd like a pet to play/touch with.

Any advice?
