Default Please Help! Accident: Can u cross this line?

When you pull out from gas station or something, and u want to make left turn
there is 2 yellow lines in the middle right?
so that when u make left turn, first, u go between that 2 yellow lines
but there is a point where 2 yellow lines gets narrower and narrower and it just have 2 yellow solid lines that u cant cross

he crossed at the very narrow yellow line
is he allowed to cross at that point??
it has diagonal lines filled in that narrow two lines if u know what i mean
cuz he did that and he hit my car..

i tried to go to DMV and its late friday, they wont open until monday sigh..

am i confusing u all?

You can not cross solid double yellow lines. period.

Anything besides that is relatively fair game.

Since that english above is sketchy, i can't tell if the 2 solid lines turned into 1, or if the 2 solid lines turned into 1 solid with a big set of diagnol lines inbetween it.

regardless, because "You can not cross solid double yellow lines. period. Anything besides that is relatively fair game. "

if his wheels didn't touch any solid double yellow line then you're probably screwed.

the opposite direction is coming straight at you. So was he turning into your lane from the left?)

(wait a second, did you hit him? In your first post you said he hit you)

Ok, if i was a cop or judge, if you told me a story like that, I'd think you were #1 stupid and shouldn't be driving or #2 lying.

If you hit another car, 99 times out of 100 it'll be your fault. If you rear end someone it's 99.9 times out of 100 your fault.

The only way you can make it appear as his fault if you hit him, is you can say "he illegaly crossed into the lane". Even if, you are going 45 in a 45 and a guy swings out into the middle lane infront of you going 5mph, 1 second before you hit him, that'll be perceived as your fault. rear ending someone driving legally(like it sounds like he was (pretend like you weren't there, was what he did legal?))

Seriously sounds like you need to draw some pictures...

From what I gathered he crossed either double yellow lines into oncoming traffic? Or did he cross the double yellows into your lane in front of you, going the same direction?

It's state law that controls what's legit, but *here* crossing the double yellows is a no-no, and yellow's with the diagonal stripes between them are to be considered an island, just like the raised islands, but cheaper...

Hope you called the police...

Hope you called the police and they got involved.

In my state there is state paperwork that needs to be filed, police or not, detailing the accident,
including a pic like you drew.

He was not supposed to cross where he did. Also, pulling in front of you like that, even had it been
legit for him to cross the center divider can be looked at as a 'failure to yield' by him. Some states
are retarded, though, for just about any rear-ending accident, so you need someone local, familiar
with the laws there, to help you through this, probably.

Make sure the authorities get your side of the story, and if insurance is involved, make sure they
do, too.

Good luck!

i called the police but i worried that i didnt tell him with enough detail.
and insurance is involved, if i am not happy with the decision, maybe i should call my insurance company and talk to them
i feel really bad, i could have avoided the accident if i saw him coming from further away
thanks for helping!!

Accidents happen because we do not get to see it coming. You should not feel bad for another person's mistake. You tried, and that is more than what some people can accomplish in an accident situation.

Hmmmmm... Just a quick thought, but did you end up hitting him on the rear of his car, or on
the side? If it was on the side, or even just partially on the side, it is a good indication that he cut
you off...
