they are like the cb radios that can listen in to the conversations that police have on their radios and walkie-talkies. havine one would let you easedrop and listen in on police conversations to see if they arein the area, looking for speeders or getting reports of speeding vehicles ETC.

but the problem is that you'd have to brush up on your police call codes since they use that alot.

and also, they are well aware of police scanners, so they also use cellphones.

I have a police scanner and cb radio set up in my car, its great, do some seroius frequency research and programming research on how to input and store your police frequencies for dif. departments in ur scanner bank. The cb is great b/c i use it to talk to fellow drivers im rallying/racing/driving with, and its the best for when on highway drives you call into ch19 universal truck channel and call in for a bear check which restuls in any trucker responding the last location they saw highway patrol, its great for spotting coppers. i did a write up on my setup here

the nice thing about scanners is, if your not doing anything illegal (street racing) then they can actually be a big help, like telling you were accidents are, and heavy traffic, quicker and better then the regular radio can

I used to have a scanner and they are good to have if you want to know what's going on in your city or surrounding cities. You can hear if cops are chasing someone in your neighborhood, robberies, car burglaries, etc...it's good to have knowledge about what's going on where you live or if you should avoid a certain part of town.

Also, you can get a heads up on traffic flow due to accidents, DUI check points, roads to avoid in case of a pursuit, etc. But yeah, definitely will need to learn radio codes of the city's PD that you will be listening to. Otherwise, you won't understand half of what they are saying. Just try listening to LAPD frequencies
