As a consumer level user of GPS on a regular basis, I am very concerned by the proposal by LightSquared to put in place ground based nodes on adjacent frequencies at very high signal levels relative to the levels currently received from GPS satellites.
The GPS satellite signals are often on the very edge of detection due to local RF noise levels, interference, and GPS signal degradations caused by weather, natural ground obstructions and man-made structures.
My hope is that the FCC will demand stringent tests of this proposed use, and ensure that the billions of dollars currently invested in consumer, commercial, and military GPS devices is protected, and current GPS receivers will not be interfered with by the proposed LightSquared use of the spectrum.
There is too much at stake to just accept anyone's word that their services will not interfere - stringent testing MUST be done to prove that point before the first LightSquared ground station even begins construction.
If LightSquared is allowed to build ground stations, any interference with current services MUST be quickly resolved by LightSquared, not the extensive GPS user community. LightSquared must bear all costs of preventing interference of any kind resulting from operations on LightSquared's frequencies.
Please protect the millions of current users of GPS services.
Thank you for listening,
Tom Losh
