SLR Cameras
Yes I know theres a thread about the D40, which is the camera I'm looking at. I even posted there. Anyway, I'm looking into getting a good SLR camera, which is friendly for noobs. I've only used compact digital cameras in the past and was looking into getting a good camera. Anyone have any suggestions other than the Nikon D40? I'm looking to spend up to $600.

I was thinking more along the lines of, other brands . I refuse to buy Sony, and I've heard come good things about the Canon Rebels. Anything else out there worth looking at?

The kit lens on the one you posted isn't all that great. I have it and it takes only so so pictures. Not very good at indoor shots.
What type of photography do you think you'd do the most?
The 1.8 I linked is a cheap, but very sharp lens. IMO, a necessity for any Nikon user and it's only $100.

Thanks, I know I've heard that it's all about the lens. I don't mind if it doesn't take the greatest pictures, I just want to learn the basics of it first, then I'll end up getting a good lens. But do you think the D40x is a better buy than the D40? D40x with lens kit is 540, and the D40 (body only) is 400 on newegg.com.

I found the d40x (body only ) for 323 the other day and I almost upgraded, but to be honest with you I think the 6 megapixal pics the d40 takes is more than enough.
I love my D40 and would recommend it to anyone.

Dont get lens kit. Get the d40x body only and get a better lens to start you off, if money is an issue the stock lens should do the job for you its just not great though. Your other option will be canon xti, great body too. Or if you want nikon and can get the d200, just go for it.

nikon and canon have both great high-end consumer dslrs, and wouldn't suggest any other brand than those two.
between nikon and canon, it's all preference and i wouldn't consider one better than the other.

Thanks for the input guys, I guess it's going to be between the D40 and the D40x. Just saw that the comparable Canon's don't use SD cards for memory, and I just bought a 4GB SD card for my cell phone, so I can just use that in the Nikon. Thanks for the input guys.

If you get the canon rebels I suggest not to get their EFS lenses (dont worry theres only very few of them) coz you cant use them if you decide to get a better body like 5d. The only EFS lens i prolly will consider is the 10-22mm. In choosing the body, try and feel the camera and get which one you are comfortable holding and using the controls. The only thing I dont like about the d40x is that it doesnt have a built in autofocus motor, you have to get a lens with autofocus motor.. sure its no biggy but its an important feature for me

I see that you are buying online, I would suggest going into stores and trying them.. see how you like those. Yeah most use compact flash memory and might also be the case when you upgrade. SD cards are more universal though so + on that one

well, as ace mentioned, find a store where you can look at the cameras in person. check out and ask around to see if there are any professional camera stores around.
shop around for prices, and if you decide to purchase online, lemme suggest B&H photo

I guess newegg.com was wrong.
Auto Focus only for AF-S or AF-I lenses
As with the D40 the D40X doesn't have an built-in focus drive motor which means it can auto focus only with lenses which have their own drive motor (AF-S and AF-I lenses).
