Just like will said, e4's arent leadership positions. They are expected to know their job and seeing as how he has school that makes him proficient that is why they promote him to E4. As far as FistsClenched saying that the army and marines being filled with idiots, F*_k yourself. What about people coming into the military as an officer because they went to college? Thats a lot worse than an E4.

That's not true. My first supervisor in the Air Force was an E4. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe E4s in the Army do lead people in field combat as well. I think by the time you're an E4, you're expected to have a certain level of job proficiency and military knowledge. He might be an E4 when he comes out of school and be proficient in his language, but I'm sure speaking Russian isn't going to be his only job requirement and he won't have any more military knowledge or leadership ability than an E1 coming out of tech school. I can't speak for anyone else but if I had been in the Army for a few years and had all that military experience behind me and some kid came fresh out of tech school and outranked me, I'd be ____ed. Who's to say then that they can't enlist people at the E-6 level based on previous experience?

Marines are typically not bright people. The Army isn't so bad but neither of them are really needed for their brains.

Here is evidence of dumb marines.

I can understand getting E4. No big deal. Only issue I see with it it, is whats the point of rank structure of its surpassed??

Its the whole we will give you E5 with less than a year in that surprises and ____es me off.
I do deployments with the Army. I am a E6 select right now, but still an E5. That means that if I deploy and there are E5 Army guys there that have been in less than a year, that they will have the same say as me, who has put 9 years in? Thats insane!!!!

At 1 year in the military, no one has anyclue in the world what is going on. E5s are Convoy commanders now adays. Thats scary!!!

In the army there are 2 E4 ranks. Specialist and Corporals. When you go from E3 to E4 you become a specialist. They arent considered leadership. They just know their job. If there is a need for a NCO (leadership) but they just dont have any E5s, they can laterally promoted a specialist to a corporal which means he becomes a leader. Getting promoted from E1 to E4 is all based on behavior and time in service. To become an E5 you have to have behavior, time in service, time in grade (as anE4), be recommended for promotion by your supervisors, pass a board, and then make points for promotion. You will not and can not become an E5 with one year in the army. Getting your E5 with 3 years in is the minimum. To classify everybody in the army or marines as idiots is idiotic within itself. Ive seen my fair share of idiots in the navy and airforce as well. All the branches have idiots.

I think the thing to understand here is that all the services are different. Like Higgy said, a SPC (E4) is not really in charge of anything. Once you are an E4 that is when you start to learn how to lead. He will not make E5 until he has shown the ability to be a leader and has met the other prerequisites.

Oh, and BTW the idiot comment was way out of line. If you think there are not "idiots" in the Air Force and Navy than you are sadly mistaken.

I agree about the idiot comments but pointless. I am not even going to comment on them because to classify any group of people as idiots as a whole is well, idiotic!!!!

Well I've had to deal with them when I was stationed at Macdill AFB and I think they're morons generally speaking. I know there are people that aren't bright in every service, but the Marines has far and away the least intelligent enlisted troops.

I would also like to say that the Marines hold an untouched record at the French Foreign Legions obstacle course. They currently hold the record for slowest time through the course at over 7 hours. The French Foreign Legion has to do it in less than 45 minutes. I had to get that little bash in there.

I would have to agree with suggestion for you.. go ____ yourself...

whats so hard to understand, as few ppl stated i get E-3 because i hav 90 credits and E-4 because they DO NOT have to teach me the language, i already have the training for that...

You are honestly going to compare the United States Marine Corps with the French Foreign Legion!? Wow the French Foreign Legion is great at THEIR OWN obstacle course imagine that. Generally speaking I think you are a moron. I have met some VERY intelligent Marines and for you to come on here and bash an entire service of outstanding men and woman just because you met a few "morons" is disrespectful and wrong.

heh . . . I see we found one of those idiots in the Air Force. Does that mean I can say that the Air Force is full of idiots? Would that be fair to Nick or any other Air Force people out there?

The obstacle course is a training course that they have to go through in their training to become an official legionaire. They aren't any more familiar with it than Marines are with the obstacle course they had to deal with in boot camp. I know the Marines aren't as skilled or tough as the French Foreign Legion, but their time just cracks me up.

I'm not going to go back on what I said. The US Marines are literally not paid to think. I found that out when we were talking about how we'd approach someone trying to leap over a fence at US CENTCOM. As the guy started to climb the fence the Air Force would yell at him to stop and try to get him to stop verbally, then if he kept climbing or got over the fence they'd shoot him. Shooting would be the last resort. The Marines approach is that once he started to climb the fence, they would shoot him. Shooting would be their first approach.

I could care less if you go back on what you said or not. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. That being said I think you are an idiot. Downgrading an entire service because of a few people you worked with... please.

Well, I dealt with the Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, and military members from coalition forces. More than a few marines came through my clinic.
