hdr trial by davedavetc, on Flickr
The camera moved on one of the shots. Also, it's not HDR. HDR isn't just about the editing, it's about having a dynamic range of color and lighting in the shot. See posts 103, 45, and 72.

What's the best way to set the camera up to take one of these pictures. I've always wanted to do one.

Not sure if your camera has it or not, but some have a setting in the camera that automatically changes exposures for consecutive pictures. If you don't have that setting, it's rather difficult to do, even with a good tripod and remote.

I think it's the AEB setting for Canon's.

You don't need a remote.
I took this on a tripod without one. I set the camera to delay 2 seconds after i press the shutter.
Set your camera to manual mode. Set the aperture, iso, and shutter speed u want. Take multiple pictures with different shutter speed. The more variation the better. Don't not change the ISO and aperture for HDR, only change your shutter speed.

I was not even thinking of shooting HDR at that time. I was new at this photography thing. I was trying different exposures to see what come out best.

I found it hard to do without a remote, but it is possible. The slightest movement of the camera completely ruins the picture. You can get a remote for like 15-20 bucks, and it's nice to have. With the remote, you just set it to AEB, stand back and click click click.

if you really wanna get into it, i'd suggest using mirror lock too since a lot of camera movement comes from that too

every time you click the shutter, the mirror used for the view finder moves up and down as the shutter blades open and close, causing slight movement.

mirror lock will lock the mirror in the up position, eliminating the movement
