bad experience at carmax.

bad experience at carmax.
So according to Kelly's Blue Book, my car, being 2006 scion tc with only 59k miles, trade in value is at:
$13150 for good
$12500 for average
$11900 for poor
so i brought to Carmax and have it appraised. They promised they will try to match KBB. However, they only offered: $7000.00! and then i went on to their website to see how much they are turning scion tc's around and selling it for, for a 2007 with 80k miles, they are selling it for $14000!
so they are ripping me off and turning around to make a 200% profit on my car.
STAY AWAY from them!
the sales guy tried so hard to tell me "there's 4 different kinds of trade ins on KBB" and i was like yah no they don't. I work in sales too so I know the trick they're trying to pull.

It would be best to sell it private party. Surprisingly though, the values for the 1st gen have gone up. I checked mine when I hit 100k a few months ago and it was only worth 7k on trade in and 8k private party. Now it's worth 8k on trade in and 10k private party. Besides gas prices, I wonder what caused this?

well think about it, if you have a 2005 tc with 30k miles and a 2009 tc with 30k miles... that shows the 2009 tc is more "abused" than the 2005 tc. AND if you get a 2005 tc with 30k miles, it's less abused by the driver, and your insurance is lower because it's an older car. So in the end you pay less due to the insurance. and you get a less abused car.

That doesn't explain the increase in value especially when mileage has gone up. Every time I get my emissions done, a warning message pops up on the computer and they ask if I've changed the cluster because I'm 20k miles over where I should be. So that's definitely not what's going on here lol.

They offered me $6000 for my 07 with 60k..that sounds about right. Carmax is known for having lower trade values. I wouldn't call it a bad experience at all. Carmax just has high rates and low trade in value on general.
And fyi you more than likely will never get kbb for sale or trade.

They base it on these facts:
1-Economical status
2-Popularity of vehicle
3-Average amount of car is being auction off
4-Any adjustments to vehicle (mods: yes they know what to look for)
5-Condition (mechanical & interior/exterior)
6-Mileage of course
-------------------
I sold them a 2006 auto xA that I bought off from them brand new that six months earlier. I put 33k miles on it. I'm thinking they were going to buy for $12k. They bought it off from me for 10k! Lucky for me since our Carmax here in Wisconsin is also Toyota dealer, I was servicing it there so they had service records to make it that much still. Also at the time, if you were current Carmax customer: they added 250 bucks to your offer that went towards some of your fees for your new car.
So the xA sat at their used lot for five months: used sale tag kept dropping all the way down to 10,500! They didn't really make anything off from it.
I would love to see what they offer my '07 tC with 217k miles!!!! LOL They offered $5k @101k miles.

I recently sold one of my xB's, and found that trade-in value on a car Regardless of condition after it hits 60k miles reverts to wholesale, which for the xB was about $5k. Most used go for 7 and up selling, even with over 100k miles on them.

I traded-in my 06 tC to a local Nissan dealer about a month ago. The car had about 65k miles on it. The dealership offered me $8,500 for the car -- keep in mind that I was also buying a car from them, so they were trying to sweeten the pot for me.
I also used to work at a Carmax. If you ever want to get a decent trade-in/sale value for your car, do not go to Carmax. They are known to lowball, but they are also the easiest to deal with. Sometimes you have to weigh your pros and cons.

I sold my 09 with 30K to carmax for $10K. If you dont like the price than dont sell the car. Carmax does offer slightly less than other dealers but the cars they sell are also much nicer, meaning they must invest more money into the car to get it up to their selling "standards"
Yes, that may seem like a big profit for them but keep in mind the money they have to spend to be able to sell the car, it may need new tires, a tune up, etc. And it will def need to be detailed, then they have overhead that they need to pay for on top of that.

It's kind of funny to view the price difference between new & used on their site.
They have used Yaris for high 16k's and new Yaris for high 15k's: they are both at the Kenosha store.
Each Carmax location even compete with each Carmax store nationally. Which makes me laugh everytime I browse their site.

i think alot of their pricing has to do with their policies as well though. Thats one of the reasons i bought my Z there. No worries like other used cars dealers. I looked at another Z locally before purchasing mine and having it shipped from AZ to my local carmax. The dealer i went to before was shady as hell. Carmax offers warranties, returns, etc. Imo the peace of mind is worth the extra money.
