Default HKS Hi-Power exhaust illegal?

Hey guys,

My friend got pulled over last week for his hi-power exhaust on his tc. I believe he got an $85 ticket. The officer told him that his muffler was too big and is illegal for it is not stock that came with the car. Any advice on what he should do? I had the the same muffler for 6months and never gotten pulled over for it. I really thought that the muffler was 50-state legal and passed the noise test. Any opinions about this will be appreciated. Thanks.

I got pulled over on I-95 near the Quantico exit up near you. I didnt get pulled over for the exhuast but the cop said something. He let me go with a warning since I am a PA resident and in the military.
I took it off to be safe.

He told me it was to loud and that aftermarket exhuasts are illegal. He didnt say anything about the size. But the cop was cool. his friend wasnt tho. He measured the height of the bodykit off the ground and wanted to ticket me for that. but the cop that had me pulled over said no.
There was 6 state troopers and they just were staring. Glad the guy that was handling it was cool.

Dang dude, you were lucky that cop was cool. The other one was just plain retarded.. trying to give you a ticket for ground clearance..

The thing that sucks for my friend is that he just installed the muffler about a month ago and now he has to remove it and put it on sale.

VA laws about moding cars suck big time!

Dude that sucks HKS Hi-power exhaust is awesome , I think there probably is a law for VA and the cop was just a *****, and wanted to pull you over, cuz in Houston I've never heard anyone get pulled over for that.

in VA as long as you dont drive like an idiot, you usually wont get pulled over unless youre in fairfax.

i was pulled over for my "extended exhaust". he said the tip came out too far (i have draxas full exhaust). i got the exhaust inspected at a locak dealer (when i didnt work at one) and they passed it because its not extremely loud (harleys are MUCH louder), and i had a DOT approved CAT. you friend still has the stock resonator and the stock CAT. so in MD he would pass because my exhaust is lounder then his i believe.

but the cop didnt give a repair order? he gave a ticket? if its a repair order... go to a dealership with it installed and see if they pass it (its free in md to get it inspected for a repair order).

i have seen people get pulled over for trd exhaust, and explained to the cop it is a factory accesory, and the cop just wanted to be a dick

Hmmm...I live in tn and I was pulled over the other day in my SRT4 and my dad was with me and the cop said my exhaust was too loud. The thing is, I dont have an exhaust well i dont have mufflers but its from the factory. It's no louder than a harley or any of the little civics with buzz pipes on em. I think cops are just asses and try to intimidate young guys to get a quick ticket.

well i can help you guys out. my friend is a state trooper and to let you guys know the hks hi-power exhaust is not illegal. why you may ask. first, because its rated at 90dbs' which is 8 under the illegal level. second is that the exhaust does not replace any existing cat.. So the next time you get pulled over for your exhaust being to loud ask him to pull out his db reader to see if he is right cause there is no why in hell he can now the level just from listening to it. if you get a ticket take him to court and fight it you'll have a 95% chance of winning.(5% just in case the judge is a *****)
yea i have the hks exhaust for about 2 months now and still havent been pulled over. i also live on a military base and they haven't pulled me over for anything.

I think it's local law. I know a lot of friends in VA told me that I've gotten alot of tickets for loud exhaust.
