Laws In NY Regarding Tail Light Tint?
I want to get my Tail lights Blacked out or Smoked (I'm pretty sure there the same thing right? Correct me if I'm wrong and sorry I'm noob at car stuff) but I'm wondering what are the laws regarding this in NY?
I'm in Long Island and don't wanna start getting tickets for stupid crap like that.

ive had officers comment on how nice the car was. been pulled over for speeding and said nothing about the tails. by state and local police. what was the ticket for? reading the law says it has to be visible from 500 feet, maybe theres was just to dark? cuz a buddy of mine got pulled over for it but he used black spray paint like a idiot not nightshade.

Well since you got pulled over for speeding the cop really wasnt paying attention to your tinted tails. The cops that get you for that stuff are the ones right behind you bored out of their minds. Then they are like Oh look! Tinted tails! *lights*
Its a game of russian Roulette pretty much.

3. If manufactured on or after January first, nineteen hundred fifty-two, at least two lighted lamps on the rear, one on each side, which lamps shall display a red light visible from the rear for a distance of at least one thousand feet.
This is taken from NYS Vehicle Traffic Law 2009

In Albany, the cops don't really care about tints or smoked lights or exhaust, they have real things to do,
but all of the small towns surrounding will give you a ticket immediately. like Joyride said it's like Russian Roulette.

But VTL says otherwise... I have the book on my desk lol I suppose its open to interpretation but as VTL states it must display Red light at least 1000 feet away.
And yes, Albany cops have way better things to do lol I work there at DMV.

If you want to be safe then take a picture write up a claim, submit it and hope you get an "excuse" note from either trenton or the DMV. The likely hood of you getting an "excuse" note is slim too.
Im trying to get an "excuse" note for front tints. Going to try to get a medical excuse from my optometrist then submit it to the DMV or trenton for validation and approval lawl.
