Gauge Led California Law
Hey guys,
I'm thinking about changing the color of my gauge, but I want to know first if it's legal to change it to any color I want in California. I was thinking something red, blue, green, pink. Maybe a combination of red and blue. Do you guys also know a place online that I can send my gauge, so they can do it for me. I don't know how to solder myself.
Thanks

You won't break any laws by changing the color of your gauge faces. Some VW models have stock blue faces with red needles, for example.
Contact SquallHeart here at SL, he does gauge LED changes at a reasonable cost.

Trung (SquallLheart) is in Cali. Alan (O5_TRD_TC) is in Cali. Jeremy (garage1217) is in AZ still I think. It seems that ledmod.com is an ok place as well. - engifineer(not me)

At first I laughed at this post then after thinking about it realized it was really serious as pretty much everything is illegal in Cali mod wise to a car!!! But interior color changes are safe, well for the moment at least until some old blue hair says she was offended by the modern high tech lighting & colors other than black and white

Yeah, I didn't even think to check at first if changing interior colors would be illegal until my cousin reminded me. But I don't know for sure if I want to change my colors right now. I saw some of the work you did Garage1217 in the forum and they are awesome, but I found Clazzio leather seat covers last night. Now I'm torn between changing lights first or seat covers.
But many thanks for the recommendation guys. I'm still doing some research before doing my first interior upgrade purchase.

I do not believe they are illegal i have a ton of blue LED's in the car that i drive with on a daily and have been for the last 2.5 years and i have pulled up next to cops and have never been busted for my lights. I am sure you can change the gauge color all you want.

VW's have blue from the factory, GM has red... so I dont think you will have any issues. But I agree, with the crazy laws out there its best to ask
It took me a couple of times reading to realize you were quoting me from somewhere else Jan
I am in MN, so you would need to ship to me. Trung and Alan are probably your best bet if you want to have it done in person depending on where in CA you live.

The issue with red or blue lights is if they are forward facing. Interior lighting and gauges are fine, but don't use Red Washer LEDs, for example.
A motorcycle was following me the other day and the yellow driving lights that faced forward were such a dark orange that it almost looked red. I kept thinking "Am I being pulled over?" as they were several car lengths behind me still. I saw several other cars slow when he came up behind them, so I don't think I was the only one confused.
