Comcast's slug like speed

dieohd - FWIW I'm in Roosevelt, and I've been noticing ultra-crappy net connections as well. Wish I'd seen this thread earlier! I'll have to start benchmarking at different times to see what happens.

I started with TCI and then we were AT&T and then we were Comcast. Comcast laid me off after 6 years... But I still use the HSI to this day.
But I remember hearing even back then there were some odd things going on in Seattle... and That was 3 years ago.

OT, but my fave service story was the time some poor guy came out at something like 2 A.M. to service something or other that was on the pole in front of our house. It was really comedic, in a sad way - he went up, did something, came back down, drove off; came back, went back up... four times. It was January or thereabouts, too - cooold and foggy. I felt bad for the poor guy, but we did get our net back!

one of my coworkers got DSL real early on.. when it was first rolling out... had trbl with it not connecting... sent a tech out to check it... up to the demarc (gray box where phone line connects to house) was good.. and inside the house to computer was good... but when everything put together it just would not work..
tech even ran a brand new cable straight to the computer in/out thru a window to rule out any bad splices inside... still dead..
6hrs later out of desperation replaced the little 2inch patch cord jack that connected the line from the street to the house wiring.... and it worked great... ... tech said he was gonna make up some trouble cuz it would look real bad to spend all that time for that fix

Ahhh...I remember those days...taking me through the way-back machine...
I got DSL when I worked for AtomFilms back in '99 and at the time I lived literally across the street from a CO up in the Roosevelt area of Seattle...I get a little gleem in my eye remembering broadband early adoption and how I was probably one of the few kids on the block to realize what streaming really was. It was great and I knew then I could never go back to 56K (heavens...that's what the Wi-Fi in New York hotels felt like this past week).

I miss the good ol' days of 2400 BPS modems and BBS's that you could call up and play crappy war games llike globalthermonuclear warfare... and tictactoe... those were the days....

Heh. That's actually funny, CoreyAnn. This past week I was in Ritzville and stayed at a classic little mom and pop, family owned motel that's been in business since 1934, and in fact my room was in 'the original building.'
Every room had a high-speed internet connection just an ethernet cable away. I was amazed when I plugged in and was instantly running 6-9Mb/s.
I'd honestly expect to get better internet connectivity in a 'spensive NYC ho-tel than in a 70 year old motel at the side of the road in Small Town, USA. 'Specially at the difference in price (under $40 for a single).
(BTW, if anyone needs to stay in Ritzville, I heartily recommend the Colwell Moter Inn - clean, fantastic customer service, well maintained, lots of extras, best bath towels I've ever run into, and cheap. Eat at the Circle-T-Cafe (or the Blue Bike) for honest good food.)

My first UNIX 'puter had four Hayes 1200 baud modems - it was a mail and news server for about 7 years ('83-90). My first laptop had a built-in 300 baud modem. http://www.tijil.org/blog/?p=10
I was thrilled when we got to 2400 baud. :D
