Default wheww

going back for a full repaint the Thoroughbred contacted PPG and it seems there are some issues with the paint and how its mixed. going back to a rental car damn but my car will look right this time PPG will see to it.

also visited my Scion dealer today and there contacting corporate about the possible mix-up ......so if you got a penny don't buy any paint till this is resolved i don't want anybody else going through this headache

Thanks Thoroughbred

Default THE SAGA !!!!!

boy whats it take to match this paint correctly????
went to see the test panels that were painted by PPG techs Thursday, guess what???
same as the car still don't flip,flip,flip.....flip arghhhh. they couldn't believe it. so they asked to see the car and we took factory painted sides off and left at shop so they could see the flip for themselves. this time the owner of Thoroughbred came down to see the problem. His eyes got so huge when he realized the extent of color change that this paint does green/gold/copper/bronze/root beer/Burgundy. He personally called PPG rep to confirm that it test panels didn't flip. to show the diff i set a panel on roof in 67 deg bright sun and the car was just washed. it just set there while the roof was so bright green/gold. ill bet some one in corp PPG is scratching head on this one.

Any idea what brand of paint was used in her RS4 repair, Victor? (Or at least what shop did the work so Thoroughbred can talk with them a bit?)

it was DeGrazia's auto Body here on Lake City way. I believe they used the dupont paint. But they were explaining to me that it is not so much the paint as a texture then you clear coat the top of that with infused pearl. That is what is supposed to do the Mazorie paint. They did a lot of the ford cars when the Mustang came out with the blue paint that was similar. Good luck I understand that it is a very dificult paint job to match.

JDSU is the company that makes the color-shift portion of the Nippon Paint Maziora Torched Penny color used on the RS4. Here is the JDSU news release telling about this: JDSU Scion RS4.0 News Releaase.

Here is a quick overview of the color-shift pigments from JDSU: ChromaFlair Overview

Now that I have that little detail figured out, here is a page of PDFs about use and care of the finishes that use JDSU's "ChromaFlair" color-shift pigments: ChromaFlair Product Literature

The JDSU site also has contact information on it for the paint folks (not end users) to use.

Good luck!!!

that is totaly awsome Tomas and much better than I had. I am not sure how the body shop did it over here. But all I know is that it worked. I hope that you get it fixed right next time and this does not drag on forever.

(Can one of the dealership types confirm the ACTUAL paint code on the RS4?

I understand the base color is 3R2, but shouldn't this be a two part code that shows which ChromaFlair pigments are added? Something like 3R2/000?

Just a thought. His poor Torched Penny looks like it is base coat only with no color flip at all.

xB RS 4.0 is out and looks to be a hit with our customers. We have noticed some chatter on the web
regarding the special Torched Penny paint and its repairability. I wanted to provide you with some first
hand information and dispel some of the rumors.
• Yes, the paint does cost more than normal paint
Why = It is due to the special color changing characteristics (high pigmentation) of the paint
• No, you do not need to re-paint the whole car if you get into an accident or get a scratch.
Why = Due to the color changing paint it is actually easier to blend and match than traditional
paints (its harder to see the painting mistakes). Spot painting instructions are attached.
• No, the color is not difficult to match
Why = Due to the color changing paint it is actually easier to blend and match than traditional paints
(it’s harder to see the painting mistakes).
• Yes, there are paint companies offering this paint for repairs.
I am pleased to announce that all of the paint companies listed below have successfully achieved color
matches for the Scion xB 3R2 "Torched Penny" color.
• PPG - 10/6/06 - completed with successful color match
• BASF - 9/4/06 - completed with successful color match
• Sherwin Williams - 10/17/06 - completed with successful color match
• DuPont - 11/10/06 - completed with successful color match
• Akzo Nobel - 11/09/06 - completed with successful color match

MAZIORA is a combination of the Latin word for magic-“Magia” and “Aurora”
that is an ultimate gradation found in nature. The word “G” in Magiora has
changed to “Z” to emphasize the brand image and express the ultimate
gradation.
“MAZIORA” is a registered trademark for NIPPON PAINT Co., Ltd.
MAZIORA pigments (powder) are
colorless and translucent that was
originally developed for the forgery
countermeasures. When light shine on
the pigments, it disperses light into a
spectrum like prism and generates
interference wavelength (color). The
mechanism is similar to wings of the
butterfly, jewel beetle and bubbles.
1) If you scratch the car...
You do not need to repaint the entire car. It is possible to repair partially
or repaint some parts. MAZIORA is accepted by auto insurance companies.
2) If you would like to install parts later...
There is a repair package color “MAZIORA TORCHED PENNY” for any
installments of additional parts.
The basic paint application process is the same. There are unique
characteristics of MAZIORA pigments. Let’s compare.
MAZIORA can generally apply to any surface. We have been promoting
MAZIORA brand in many industries. Takuya Kurosawa won the
Championship last year in the 4th year of riding “MAZIORA Altezza” at
the Super Endurance Race. Many musicians also use instruments with
MAZIORA colors.
Why does “MAZIORA” color change with the angle?
What does “MAZIORA” mean?
Does it difficult to repair the paint with so much color shift?
What is the difference between pearl and metallic?
Does MAZIORA work for anything other than cars?

OK, right now I have the .pdf file hosted on one of my servers, and anyone who wants it can grab a copy here:

http://tijil.org/scion_torched_penny_repair.pdf

If someone needs .jpg images of the pages, I can do that, too, but I believe the PDF is a better choice, especially if someone wants to print it out.

(I'll be working on getting the .pdf file hosted on ScionLife, and putting something up in the tech section. Should be up, probably, sometime this weekend.)
