The Johnston Ridge Observatory sits on a bluff just 5-1/2 miles from the crater at an elevation of 4,314'/1,327m and offers grand views of Mount St. Helens and much of the 1980 blast zone. This visitor center is the closest you can get to the mountain by car when driving in from the west and is located 53 miles east of the town of Castle Rock at the end of State Route 504.
That seems to fit with the times I remember...

Yeah, depending on the traffic, and we have to slow down to 25 at least once, it will be a little over an hour drive one way. Will need to keep an eye on the road coming back down. Last year there were some bad spots and they could do some damage to a rim if hit hard enough.

Well, weather looks like it might be going south on us.

Forecast for Toutle, WA says 65 and 70% chance of rain. They're even talking snow levels!!! (8,000 ft.) Then again, Johnston Ridge is at 4,314 ft., so that shouldn't be a concern. Let's hope things change.

Narsty weather might make the viewing from Johnston Ridge poor, but the Observatory has new displays and stuff, and the potluck picnic should still be good.

I'm looking forward to the day!

As am I! Then again, us PNWers should be used to a little rain!

The rain (and the drippy green) are actually something I missed when I've lived in other parts of the country... Strange, eh?

Do you know what part of the parking lot you'll be? A landmark or something? I'm picking up a friend in Tigard and coming up I-5 will attempt to meet up with you at 8:30. 8:30 on a sunday, dang, is there a Starbuck's there?

Northbound, exit 4, 78th st exit, stay right on 78th, then right on hwy 99, Fred Meyer will be on your right. Hope that helps. I think there is a Starbucks right as you turn onto 99, right where they are meeting, that end of the parking lot.

Yes, there is a Starbucks there. Actually, we'll be on the north side of the parking lot by Starbucks. Look for the white Yaris with the orange wheels (me). That shouldn't be too hard to find.

Got the buns, hoping 6 packages each of the dog and hamburger buns will be enough (8 per package) and I got good sized hamburger buns too. No wimpy buns here!

Weather is beautiful here today, too bad it's not gonna stick. Going to finish detailing the car (really START detailing) and paint my grill back to black. The body shop painted it to match the car (silver) so it just looks like galvanized chicken wire.

Weather in University Place (Tacoma) is BEAUTIFUL right now - sunny and even warm!

If we had this at Seaquest tomorrow it would be utterly fantastic.

In any case, I'll be at the Tacoma meet point at 8AM and rolling south by 8:30, rain or shine.

See ya!

Yes, it's a gorgeous day in Portland—an exquisite day for detailing. It will be for nil, however, when it rains tomorrow.

Pretty uneasy about my failed water pump and possible issues with my belt tensioner and drive belt right now, probably not going to come, don't wanna end up on the side of the road.

Can you grab a ride with someone else, Tyler?

That would give you free reign to take pics you couldn't as driver...

We'll see.
