Date: Wednesday, May 17, 2006

Contact: Sylvia Ross, WSDOT Communications, 360-905-2058

KALAMA/LONGVIEW – In anticipation of the demolition of PGE’s Trojan cooling tower, WSDOT will be managing traffic control on I-5 in Cowlitz County on the morning of Sunday, May 21, 2006.

Motorists planning to travel on I-5, in the vicinity of Kalama and Longview (mile posts 25 – 35), are urged to view the following traffic plan:

May 20, 5 p.m. – WSP vehicles begin patrolling the highway until the closure
May 21 6:45 a.m. – rolling slowdowns begin
May 21, 6:55 a.m. – closure begins
May 21, 7:00 a.m. – detonation
May 21, 7:15 a.m. – highway reopens to all traffic

Washington State Patrol (WSP) vehicles will be patrolling the area starting on Saturday, May 20, for any vehicles illegally parked on or near the highway. Any illegal vehicles will be ticketed and towed.

Approximately 15 minutes before the implosion (6:45 a.m.), WSDOT and WSP vehicles will begin rolling slowdowns to clear all vehicles out of the closure area (mile post 28 – 34).

The implosion is scheduled to take place at 7 a.m. Traffic on I-5 is set to resume within approximately 15 minutes of the implosion.

For information about the Trojan tower and demolition details, please visit PGE.

I am currently looking for a place that I can get a good view, hopefully I will be working the graveyard shift Sat. night, then I will have a great vantage point, on top of the elevator, nearly right across the river from it, if no work then I may cruise down to the park in Kalama around midnight and just hang out all night there if the cops don't kick me out. Will have wifes 35mm with motor drive to snap off a whole roll of film in 20 seconds mounted on tripod plus my digital set in video mode. Please mr officer, I'll make copies for you too, lol.

OK, working a double shift tonight, camera batteries are charging, wifes camera is loaded with new batteries and a roll of 800 35mm film, 36 exposure, so I will be getting pics. Elevator is shutting down at 6:30, so there won't be any work to distract my quest. Cross your fingers and hope this all works out.

Wow, talk about quick and impressive... took 8 seconds to bring it down. Robbie, hope you got some killer pictures!

Way to go CDI, 1 down, 4 to go! (CDI is bringing down 4 cooling towers in England)

Well, things didn't go as planned, had a malfunction on the 35mm drive motor and missed the initial flash, did get a bit of video on digital camera, was trying to get 35mm to fire a few shots before and it wasn't working, was franticly trying to get it to work when boom, I missed it . As you can see by some of the pics, there were lots of video cams so I will be getting a CD burned with the implosion on it, but this is what I ended up with, not happy, but it was still pretty cool and the dust cloud stayed on the other side of the river for us. Hardhats were because it was a work area, not because we thought we needed them, lol.

Nice stuff man!

Hey.. since you work at the port.. does BNSF/UP dump your grain trains or do you guys have your own people dump the trains?

Either way, if your hiring, lemme know!

Well, found out why 35mm didn't fire off, counter on motor drive wasn't reset properly, wife reset it manuelly and there is a reset button that she didn't push, oh well, guess I they could rebuild and then reimplode for me, right, lol.
