there is no basic PS guille.. you might have an old one. if you want a good way to sharpen pictures with out killing it and going overboard do this...
Filter>Sharpen>Smart Sharpen
you will be able to choose an actual radius of pixels and the % of sharpening at the same time which gives you a more detailed look in the picture with out going overboard on the grainyness
another option is this
Filter>Sharpen>Un Sharpen Mask
its the same as above ONLY this feature uses the highs, midtones, and lowes in the coloring of the picture to sharpen it. its a common trick used when ppl want to achieve that HDR effect and still maintain resolution or improve it.
