I live in FL and its probably diff in ever state... I want to try to install some underglow on my xB and I would like to know what the legality of colors and what u can have and what u cant have... If any1 knows anything about this pls give me some info... thanks all...

 

as far as i know.. any color is legal. as long as you dont drive on the roads with it on. if you have it on in parking lots only its safe. unless the cop is in a bad mood.

 

all collors are llegile. i had went to a cop a ask about if the under glow is illegile he said no just as long as you can not see the bulb under the car. so i would go to a cop and ask

Here's ow it is in CO -
Any blue lights on the exterior of the car are completely illegal.
Any lights directly visible on the exterior of the car that are not DOT legal can get you a visit to the curb. That means that underbody is ok as long as the bulb is not visible. If you are impolite to the cop, he could easily tuck his head under you car, and voila! they're visible.

I really don't know anyone who drives with underbody lighing on, so the above two points are somewhat moot. We usually save lights for parking lots, so that when we leave our cars, the hoodrats know who to jack.

 

Hey, I live in Hollywood, Fl. I was like that when I got my tc. I had red neons and the cops pulled me over . The made me go to court because it was against the law so they say . Then I got blue neons and the same exact thing happened. They told me any color that resembles police colors or lights are against the law. But then again, it really depends on the cop. He can always give you a warning or do like they did me. Give me tickets and have me appear in court. Go to a police station and ask since thats the only way of knowing the truth. I have white lightsnow and there have been no problems now.

 

n e underglow is allowed but red or blue...and they cant flash...u can get a hefty fine for it..just ask Don bout it

 

I can vouch - blue is illegal. we were at the tuner bash in daytona in 2002 in a brand new tahoe, 23" 's lots of bass and blue neons lighting the pavement. also blue fog light bulbs ( my roommate had more money than sense ) we were issued 2 YES 2 tickets within 30 minutes. so we decided to crank up the 6 - 15" inch subs and go ahead and get a noise ordinance violation too. blue is illegal , but white neons are pretty sweet. some guys who are into vip style have been using small round lights that mount under the car that look very cool. the tuner bash is soon. sometime in march it is the florida version of nopi but way more obscene and alcohol affected at night. some of the best cars in the south can be seen. I am a little tired of that night life but I do miss seeing the rides.

 

the orange neon color would look good against that white. I don't think you would get hasseled with that color.

 

Hide the tubeage. You want indirect light rather than direct light. In most places if the cops are ****** about it, they will give you a ticket. Some places the cops don't care unless it's strobing. Many people I've spoken with about underglow say that every color can be made illegal, you're best bet is to talk with someone at the DMV to see what is allowed and restricted. It is radically different for every state... Florida is the most lenient.

 

Red and blue are big no no's. Any other color should be fine as long as it's not flashing or changing colors. Who knows for all states though. I see red and blue all the time, lit while they are driving. They haven't gotten popped yet I guess.

 

Cool THX guys... ...I guess I'll be looking for some sweet white... I dont want them to look like the ceiling at a grocery store, but like those lights on new BMW's and Cadillacs.. I hope they have a such color...

 

I've always been told that blue and red are illegal. Every police officer I've asked has told me something different,so I don't even think they really know.

 

i'm sure it's different state by state, but i'm still having a hard time getting my head around the idea that red underglow would be illegal if colors such as white would be legal.

What I'm trying to say is that I totally get the concept that blue is a reserved color, but red is REQUIRED on all licensable vehicles. I don't understand how red would be a no-no.

Of course, I know cops that will write for anything and let the judge sort it out. That's if you have attitude...the same guys will usually let anything but the most severe POs go with just a warning, provided you keep both hands are on the wheel, and follow every statement with 'officer', or 'sir'...

And of course, every state is different. I think sproket has the best advice - check witht the local DMV :shrugs:

 

I talked to the director of the TN department of safety, and he said this came from the state attorney general. He told me in this state blue and red exterior lighting is illegal. Those colors are reserved for emergency vehicles. Any other color under car kit is perfectly legal as long as you can't see the tubes; only the indirect lighting on the road.
