Scion Champion: Leslie Martinez, Hollywood Scion (FL)

Leslie Martinez has always been a big believer in the benefits of grassroots marketing, staging three major events at Hollywood Scion in 2007, her first full year on the sales staff. But Martinez’s ties to the brand go further, as a tC owner and active participant in Scion communities, both in person and online.

As such, when the opportunity presented itself to add another layer to a car show planned for March, she didn’t hesitate.

Grassroots at a Higher Level

Friend and fellow Scion Evolution member Danny Milanes opened the door.

“He works with a church and helps feed and clothe the homeless one day a week,” says Martinez. “I was tossing around some ideas with him and wondered if it would be OK for our Scion community to get involved.”

Milanes checked with the church and they gave him and Martinez an enthusiastic thumbs up. The concept was simple: participants in the show were invited to donate clothes, food and money to help support the church’s outreach efforts. The response was overwhelming.

“There were basically no requirements for attending the show: just show up and have a good time,” says Martinez. “But we asked people, if they could, to please help. And they just went crazy. We ended up with a whole room full of clothes. We needed a full-size van to pick it up and get it to the church.”

A Show at Heart

In most other respects, the car show followed the tried and true formula. Martinez arranged for a DJ, barbecue, giveaways, T-shirts and trophies. Sixty-three Scion vehicles were entered in the competition and some 200 people in all showed up.

“I have a lot of friends in the Scion communities,” says Martinez. “I keep in touch with a lot of the clubs and hit a lot of the forums. It didn’t take too much to get the word out.”


The Power of Community

Martinez might downplay her role in the process. But those who directly benefited from her efforts would no doubt beg to differ. At its best, Scion isn’t simply a brand of cars. It’s also a band of brothers…and sisters.

“I’ve been involved with Scion for three years now and everyone in the community is so friendly,” she says. “I’ll be driving down the street in my tC and see someone in an xB and we’ll beep and wave to one another. It’s almost like being part of a big family. Before I moved here, I worked as an executive assistant at an aerospace company. That’s a totally different reality.”

Based on the initial success, Martinez plans to create similar outreach opportunities for the dealership’s future grassroots events—with the help of sponsors such as Urban Racer, Pattern Tech (King Pin), XM Radio, Beyond Marketing and Candy Store Marketing Group. Martinez hasn’t been at this very long. But she’s already built up quite the network—for business and benevolence.

“We’ll definitely do it again,” she says. “We’ll do whatever we can to give back to the community.”
