2008 Scion xB & xD Photos Leaked One Day Early
#362
I rented a Diahtsu Terios when I was in St. Martin this summer. That car ROCKED. We beat on it the car pretty good. It took a licking and kept on ticking. Great fun to drive, especially since St. Martin is pretty much 'no rules' driving. I saw ONE stoplight and ONE stopsign all week and we drove the entire island.....
Oh yeah, judging by the adds to the new XB and the bigger motor, etc, it's GOTTA cost more than the current one. 15k? yeah, right. I bought mine as a third car for city driving and general run around. It sits in the garage all winter. The CRV and the truck are for the snow.....
Also, where the heck is the rear privacy glass on the new one??

The scaling of the xB/xB2 comparo pic I posted is as close as I could judge it based on wheel/tire size and what I remembered from Miami. It may bee of a little, bit not by all that much.
One thing that isn't obvious with the pic's stacked like that is the height difference between the two - one's a tall box the other isn't.
I'm gonna do one more comparo just for laughs.

Uh, there will not be near as much demand for xB2 as for the xB1.
You could also say people will buy these...about the Chevy Venture.

xB is easy to get hold of, and it has been that way pretty much since it came out. Scion have conducted months (even years) of surveys, interviews, research, market planning, strategy, and all kinds of other preparation while designing the replacement. What makes you so sure that you're right and they're wrong?
I know the common objections to buying an xB, because I've dealt with them for a long time now. Same with the xA, and the tC for that matter. The new designs hit a significant number of those objections dead on. Scion and Toyota both have been going from strength to strength for months on end now. I don't see that this is going to stop anytime soon. I'm sure the new designs will lose some people, but I'm willing to bet they will bring even more in to replace them.
@Tomas: while I sympathise with your being between the cracks, as it were, filling the cracks in was never the intention for the Scion brand. Scion was always about bringing new (and younger) people into the Toyota family. When you consider, however, that real-world mileage for the 1.5 litre engines has never really been considerably better (if at all) than the Corollas, the future of the 1.5 engine has always been dubious. And for the record, I have an Echo at the moment; I'm VERY familiar with the platform/engine.

That small roadster segment is expensive now. My MR2 Spyder, when new, was over $25k! The Solstice/Sky are expensive (and heavy).
When you tie the MX-5 in with the Scion xA/xB weight is what popps into my head. The current xA/xB are lighter than a current MX-5 and that is one of the things I like so much about them. So when they grow in size, I hope they don't grow too much in weight.

The bottom line is that Scion was intended to bring new people into the Toyota family. By markedly changing the body styles every three years, you are maximising the market you are reaching out to.

The xB2 will be bought by a different group of people - those wanting a "longer, lower, wider, more power" vehicle with more mainstream styling. The tC station wagon people.
Those who enjoyed the very strict "form follows function" cubical "city car" xB Classic don't necessarily want a 10 inches longer, 4-6 inches wider, 3 inches lower, bigger engined curvey and stylish station wagon/van/mom-car.
BUT, while Scion is expanding it's "Introduction to Toyota" market to a new segment, they have made an error, IMHO, in leaving those City Car/UUV people out in the cold: There is NO model in the Scion or Toyota lines in the United States that is at ALL a reasonable step to take when we retire our xB Classics. None.
The City Car or UUV was a bold idea to introduce into the US market, and for a number of reasons it took root and sold MUCH better than anyone at Toyota or Scion ever expected. It fired the imagination by being such an honest and unapologetically "square" car.
Not that they have introduced that idea to the market, they have totally, absolutely and completely abandoned that niche. There is no vehicle in that segment now that they have discontinued the xB Classic. This is a perfect opportunity for another manufacturer to import an established City Car into the US. (There are a number of them in other markets.)
If Scion felt the need to 'expand' their appeal to a new segment, Scion/Toyota needed to look at the new segment they created in this country, and plan for replacements for the xB Classics that WILL over the years need to be retired. Those folks will be looking for a replacement, and there is nothing, absolutely nothing, left in that segment in this country.
I'll be keeping my little urban box until it's wheels fall off, I can only hope that when I need it, there will be a replacement. Right now, there is NOT.

I feel the same way about it. . . but it's also WAAAAY too tall. By the looks of the fenders, it can't be dropped too much either. To look good, it would need a 4 inch drop, and that wouldn't be very practical.
