Official 2011 Scion tC Thread (2nd gen)

Saying this thing will sell like hotcakes is a stretch. I think the TC gets a nice first year bump, but after that it fades. Once all the "have to have the new thing" people get their TC the sales numbers will drop.
The hit to Toyota's reputation the recall fiasco caused is going to really hurt this. Lots of people bought the TC because it was a safe choice and filled a unique niche in the market. Toyota isn't the safe choice it once was and there are a raft of stronger competitors that didn't exist in 2005. Moreover, people are far more willing to check out those competitors.
As a cheap car with lots of features, the Kia beats it. As a reliable car with a golden reputation the Civic EX beats it. As a drivers car there are numerous better options for not much more money. Scion no longer has a "new"/"cool" buzz around it. Provided Toyota doesn't botch it (always a possibility) the FT-86 sitting across the showroom for 4k more is going to kill the TC for all but the most credit challenged.
I know the economy is in the tank but the bottom line is that Toyota went cheap on this thing so they can milk as much profit out of it as they can. Maybe five years ago when Scion was new and Toyota was unassailable this would have worked, but the market is so much more competitive and the goodwill of the Toyota name isn't what it once was.

the kia looks better because they hired Audi's designer! Which was a very good move. Even if you look into the Koup's interior, you'll see elements of the tC1! look at the parking/e-brake next to the cup holders, or the three bin instrument panel gauges, or how the silver cascades down to the center console. It has bits from the tC1 which were excellent. It has been said for awhile now that Japan should watch out for the Koreans as they were quickly improving. Well that day is about here! Japan has sat on their butts for so long, just enjoying their past as being "Japanese quality" but in the quest for more profit, they've let that slip.
It might be true that they put this or that into the tc2 and skimped elsewhere to make profit, that's the whole business atmosphere. But dropping an engine into the car that is already available in other cars, the R&D is already paid for! It's not like a new engine being developed costing $$$ to create. Scion skimped where it could make more money. like the HVAC controls, seats, interior.
One more thing. Did anyone NOTICE that the instrument gauges DO NOT HAVE A COOLANT GAUGE anymore! Another cost reduction! ouch.

((warning this rant is lengthy))
Alright something thats piking me off about the last two pages of threads is a theme of ignorance running amok.
Scion is fighting two major problems here that it had no control over: Its a new car company (<10 years old) and the economy took a apocalyptic nose dive beginning in July 2007.
All of these people talking about sales being spectacular in 2006 and then **** in 2008 need to realize that the entire economy was hand delivered to satan in that window of time. The Real Estate, Financial services and the automotive sectors were ground zero for an economic nuke that cost over 10% of this country (and more if you count the nearly two dozen other countries in economic crisis also --> Greece's goverment is nearing having to file for BANKRUPTCY!) lost its job and doesnt have the money to 'risk' buying a basically unknown car brand.
Even after 7 years of Scion being in existence, people still look at me funny when I say I own a Scion...they ask me "who's that made by?" thinking that Scion is a model of car, not an entire car line. Or they say "Oh you own one of those boxy things?" Again, no one even knows the xA (their first car) or the tC even existed! And if you say xD in most IM or chats they think you are typing the laughing emoticon of XD, not realizing it's a car model not an internet slang word.
Now the things they do have control over are numerous and lately, quite erroneous.
The commercials for Scion look like childish anime BS. The cars are all deformed looking and stylized and then when Joe Schmoe 18-year-old goes to the dealer and doesnt see an option for a neon green car with huge wheels and wild fender flares, he goes somewhere else.
No wonder the average car buyer doesn't know what a Scion is or what it has compared to other cars in its class. Every other car add touts that such-and-such feature is better than XXXXX brand/model. Scion just shows little red monsters called Deviants running around the screen followed by the Scion logo at the end.
So what sane minded, unemployed person is going to take a risk on a car that they essentially no nothing about? Ford made DAMN SURE we knew about the fancy new Sync system in the Fusion. And GM made DAMN SURE we knew that the Malibu has better gas mileage than the Accord and Camry. What do the Scion commercials tell us? Um.....that they know how to make our car transform into a cartoon character? Huh? Not even a base price listed in some of their ads.
Secondly, Scion SOLD us this lifestyle, car brand and 'unity' idea. They promised us fresh, forward thinking designs and engineering feats.
For hellsakes, the sales people NEVER forgot to mention the KNEE AIRBAG that was "only available on luxury cars" or the panoramic moon roof that only existed in cars in the cost class ABOVE the tC. And for 16k the tC did have more features standard than any other car in its class.
They touted its ahead-of-its-time features neatly packaged into an anorexic price tag!
If you wanted a moon roof on a mazda3/sentra/civic/cobalt/tiburon in 2005, that was a $700-1200 option that was PACKAGED with other features. NO compact sports coupe came with 4-wheel disc Anti-lock brakes. Some didnt even offer them as an option. And it was the only car that didn't have a performance trim level but yet still managed to have more HP and TQ than any of the base models of the aforementioned makes of cars. I mean it took a revamp of the Sentra with the SE-R trim level in like 2007 or 2008 to finally exceed the engine spec's of the tC. It took the Si trim of the Civic to beat the tC. Even the current Mazda3 2.5L engine barely beats the current tC with 173 hp. But in 2005 it still had its paltry 135hp engine.
Even if the mazda3/sentra/civic/cobalt/tiburon had all the stuff the tC had as options, they all ended up costing more than the tC by an average of $800. In most cases they didn't even have these features available....until at least 2008.
How do I know all this? Because starting in 2006 I was in the market for a car and researched the hells out of all of the above mentioned brands and settled on the tC because for what it was, it had more than anything else in one nice neat tidy little package for a price that was as good as or better than the competition and with toyota reliability (no recalls in 2006-2007 when I bought my original tC)
So the reason all of us 'fanboys' are so ____ed that the tC is a lame duck is because there was NO forward thinking on this. The new tC is a typical example of Toyota 'Keep up with the joneses and simply making a car that is not ahead of the competition the way the original tC was when it was released.
Everyone has at least a 5spd tranny now, most have a 6spd manual. Everyone has traction control because I believe of a new government regulation. So thats NOT an addition if every car has to have it. Not to mention if you know how traction control works, its a piece of junk technology anyway with a non-4/AWD car. Everyone has Bluetooth connectivity.
Everyone is offering a moonroof now, some even have a panoramic one now also. Everyone has USB integration or some form of MP3 playing capability.
My point is that the tC2 is only keeping up with the competition, not exceeding it the way the original exceeded its previous competition....which is why the sales numbers (in addition to the radioactive economy) have tumbled.
The tC2 basically has nothing new to offer that the other cars in its class dont have.
Features that most of the other cars in its class don't have that would have made most of us forgive the terrible interior and would have set this car apart would be:
All LED Tails (currently I think only the Mazda3 and the Sentra SE-R/Spec-V have these)
Xenon HID's (none have this, except maybe the Lancer, need to check on that)
Power Drivers Seat
Heated/Fog-free mirrors (sentra offers this standard)
Paddle Shifters (long shot, I know, but still not offered except on the Spec-V)
Thats a short list, but its got some Luxury-style features included to set the car apart from the rest.
And before someone goes and says "yes those are nice, but they will all cost money!!", consider this.
In 2005, the only car that offered a panoramic roof of any importance was the Nissan Altima (maybe it was the Maxima, I dont keep up with Nissan too much).
In 2005, only luxury cars had knee airbags.
In 2005, only midsized and larger cars had cruise control standard.
Yet in all those cases, they still managed to make the car 16k.
With Xenon bulbs increasing in production for cars, their cost is lowered, same for LED technology. They added a subwoofer, steering wheel controls, projector headlamps and new tail lights without the price budging much. How would these upgrades, I mentioned be any different?
The fact remains that the tC is no longer a feature-rich car that other manufacturers are chasing to duplicate. Its that simple. They now are following popular trends instead of setting the trend as the gen 1 quietly did. The new body is sorta nice. The power-train is a nice upgrade, but of course, it doesnt outpace its competition the way the gen 1 did.
They stripped it of logical, standard things in favor of things that shouldn't have cost any more to make than the current tC already did.
Its a lame duck that Scion and Toyota need to go back and get back to their roots about and redo. Perhaps the Gen3 will be better, but thats at least another 8 years away.
And to make my point even more hard core...here is an IM conversation I had with my girlfriend who was introduced to the scion brand by me. This is what she had to say about the new tC in response to those people who said that this thing will sell like hotcakes (she is a muscle car fan and currently owns a Grand Prix GT, but likes Scion, though not intimately familiar with it):
Scion, you have failed. Its over, go back to the drawing board.
I love my 2008 tC and think the new one is a POS in and out.

Yup. And it's not just Kia, Hyundai has easily surpassed Toyota in quality and value. The only reason I could ever see someone buying something like a Camry or Corolla over a Hyundai Sonata or Genesis or Kia Optima (2011), is that they didn't even know the Hyundai/Kia existed.

But if you took those same 50 people and showed them the latest each has to offer - WITHOUT the badge... they'd love them.

Well that and the people who really still have no clue how far Hyundai and Kia have come. If you were to ask 50 people on a street corner what they thought of either brand, you'd probably end up with a majority of "junk."

I guess straight lines and angles are the new round and curvy. I don't know what happened, but I guess Scion decided to take the curves away from tC to make it look more like the other cars in their line up (the xB2, xD, and iQ). I'll stick with my tC for now, but I won't be getting a tC2. Goodluck to Scion with this radical change.

Exactly. I hated the Gen Coupe when it came out. I finally test drove it, and I was pretty much sold on it. Gorgeous car, inside and out, great build quality, huge bang for your buck, loaded with options, etc. If the new tC and the entire current Toyota lineup say anything about what the interior of the FT86 will look like, then I really feel sorry for anyone who buys that over the Gen Coupe.
They can make quality cars easily if they keep stealing other car makers designs and ideas.
I'd rather own the Kia Koup...its an original design and by far a better looking car then anything that Hyundai will ever make.
If anyone had the patience to read my post above, the weakening economy showed the flaws in Scion that we all ignored for the last 7 years.
My next car wont be a Scion if the iQ turns out to be a POS. The tC2 is a waste.

The Gen Coupe is an underpowered V6 that steals its exterior design from two luxury car makers. Hyundai does this for all its cars and for that reason alone, I'll never buy one.

At least the Koup is ripping off other cars in its class...not a Benz and BMW and its not the entire line of cars.
I've rented every car Hyundai has ever made and they're all candy coated POS'. end of story. Kia isn't much better, but I'd take a Kia over a Hyundai anytime.

Kia is doing the same with the 2011 Optima and Forte Koupe. Heck even the 2011 Hyundai Sonata is a head turner, put it up against the Genesis Coupe and I would almost be inclined to take the Sonata.
Seems like you're comparing Hyundai and Kia to every 1990 model you've seen, their latest efforts are much more than the candy coated POS from the past.

MSRP was also increased by roughly US$100. Total sales in the United States for the year was 79,794, an increase of almost 41% over previous year.

You're right, while the competition is not direct, it goes to show that there is much more bang for the buck to be had and to make matters worse it's from a larger car which should cost much more to manufacturer than the smaller tC...

does anyone know for a fact, DOES TOYOTA/SCION READ THIS FORUM?
I remember before in 2005, they came on here to ask about the improvements we'd like, we mentioned a round volume control on the radio, and they did.
So anyone know if Scion is still reading these posts?
