if cars are getting more economical, then why do they keep growing in girth and getting bigger engines? let's remeber that the current Civic is as big as a late 90's Accord. The Fit is as big as a late 90's Civic. at least the xD, which is a direct model replacement to the xA( meaning they are both the Ist in Japan), gets relatively the same gas mileage with a larger, better power-up potential engine. but whoever is designeing cars for Toyota needs a wakeup up punch. the cars are all blubbery looking. look at the last gen highlander to the new one. got a lot of babyfat on it....all the cars have that look. the iQ will sell well with the Toyota core buyers. senior citizens.

I agree, cars have originally strayed from what made them popular in the first place. Prime example are the Z cars. from the 240z to the 350z, it's just blown up. the 370z somewhat goes back to what made it famous, but it is still blown up. I dont get why everything has to get bigger. Hence the xB2 SUV we got.

as I pointed out about the climate controls. digital available with smart key,but they want the price kept low. can't any significant price jump to ruin a car payment. would only raise it 20-50 bucks. geez, have Scion owners revealed a certain cheapness?

For the answer to this, just look at all the people clamoring for a ridiculously cheap price for the iQ. I mean, someone asked that it be UNDER 9 THOUSAND DOLLARS! That would make it the cheapest car in the US by more than a grand. Half of the comments on here are that they're not willing to pay more for such a small car, ie they equate size with value. As long as Americans are doing that, car makers are going to increase the size of the vehicles so that they can charge us more. Mazda3? "Bigger in every dimension, but we only raised the price a little bit, come buy it". And people will buy it, because they'll think "OMG, it's bigger but it's only $18k!"

Newsflash, it's not that much more economical to build an iQ than a Yaris. Hell, it might even be *more* expensive to build, based on the engine and materials used. Even though it's 10" shorter than something else, it still needs 4 wheels, 4 seats, engine, transmission, body panels, windows, radio, HVAC, etc.

The IQ in Europe is supposed to start at the equivalent of $17k USD. That's because alot more thought had to go into the packaging and R&D to make it as compact as possible. I imagine Scion marketing realizes that wouldn't fly over here on Toyota lots with Yarises and Scions, so they must have found a way to bring it to produce it cheaper while making it more powerful. It'll be interesting to see what they changed. I'm really excited by it personally, can't wait to drive one. And if all the JDM IQ stuff (kits/suspension/etc) will work on it, I'm gonna have to think long and hard about keeping my xB.

Boxer - don't forget that you can't do straight up conversions, since Euro pricing usually includes duty and VAT (value added taxes), where US pricing doesn't. In the UK it starts at £500 more than the Yaris, so figure it starting about $750 more than the Yaris here (or about $13k).

remember that kit will most likely run you a few G's. you ready to fork out that type of cash for a body kit? most of you won;t even buy the lip kit for the tC cuz it's too expensive.

NOW, if toyota is "smart" enough to use their "iQ" they'll rip the rims off it, slap on some oem wheels with some wheel covers and drop this as-is onto a Scion lot near you. Also keep the base price under $12,500.
Totally "beat" Chevy to the punch on their 2010-2011 Chevy Beat.
