as for the diesel engine.... you do not use the hp. as much as the amount of torque that diesel produces vs the gas engine..
if gas/diesel does go to over $5 per gallon,, look for toyota/diahatsu to try to get those little pickups (now are sold only for off highway use) approved ....

these are "street legal"

and are on display at Lane Museum, Nashvill,TN.

Lee is just under 6' tall

The "combined" mileage for the diesel is 4.1 l/100km, ~57mpg. The gas version 4.6 l/100km, ~51mpg. (And, FWIW, to get mpg from l/100km, divide by 235.)

I see no reason why it shouldn't be sold over here if Diamler-Chrysler is going to sell the Smart in a year or two. What's the Hp ?

I'd look at them as a replacement for our 1998 Civic. My wife's commute is 15 min on nothing but city streets. This would be a good mode of transportation for us.
