Do dealerships HAVE to do this fix, or is it optional? I don't like other people working on my car, especially the interior.

Yeah - doesn't sound like a software bug to me. If it was, I think they'd not only move faster, but would loudly announce it - people seem more comfortable with a little bug than a whole piece of defective harware.

"This condition can occur if the door for that side of the vehicle is closed with a high rate of force while the vehicle’s ignition is in the “On” position or within 90 seconds of turning the ignition key from the “On” position to the “Off” position."
Just because they are replacing the unit doesn't mean its not a software bug. Why else would it randomly go off after turning the car to 'Off'. Though it may be a faulty sensor and its easier to replace the whole thing.

But since airbags are safety components, we're taking this seriously and do want to conduct the sensor replacement on each and every tC that falls within the affected range.
As for the dealers, they do not yet have all of the material needed to conduct the campaign. That will happen next week--by the 31st--when detailed technical instructions are relayed to the Scion dealership service departments. We did communicate to them yesterday the specifics of the campaign--and I think someone on here posted the actual Dealer Daily communication. One correction though in that--VIN number ranges have been identified, and our Scion Customer Experience Specialists have been thoroughly briefed on the recall details. You can reach them at 866.70.SCION. Or chat live by accessing our website, http://www.scion.com/.
Hope this info helps. We truly regret the inconvenience that this campaign may cause our Scion tC customers, but will work tirelessly with our dealers to minimize that and retain the confidence and trust of Scion owners. It's one part of the Scion ownership experience we frankly would prefer not to offer--but you can be assured we will do it right.

I think my car falls into this - i have an Early '06 model with side curtains.
I know of 1 person out of the 17 who this had happened to. Her car door slammed closed hard then boom - the airbags deployed.
I for one will get this recall done!

I called Scion Corporate yesterday for details on this, they told me that they don't have details on which cars are effected yet but they will be sending cards out to those who are involved. I believe the cards were mentioned in the press release. They did tell me that only certain cars, not the entire 30K would be involved... but who knows.

I just called and I'm affected. Right now they are still working on getting the repair materials/instructions ready for the dealerships. Basically, there is not much to be done until you get the notice in the mail that they are prepared to fix the problem.
You can call the Scion Service phone ((866) 707 - 2466) to determine if your car was affected.
