Bicycle Rack on tC
#21
I don't want to knock the thread off topic... but are you carrying more than one bike? If not, I think if you took the appropriate precautions, a bike should easily fit in the back of the tC (rear seats folded flat)

You definitely can fit your bike into the back with the seats down...
I've managed to fit my bike, golf clubs, and luggage for a week all in my car...
But if you are taking a second person, you're out of luck.

I dont have a photo yet but I use a Hollywood trunk rack on my tc and easily have carried two heavy mtn bikes. But the key is to use special glass hatch hooks. I got mine form Yakima, that are plastic and rubber "dog-bones" that you place inside the hatch. They have strap that you feed out the top and into the rack. That way you are not attaching it to the glass and it is very secure. I'll take a photo the next time I use it. No problems so far (9 months using 1x a week)
It is much easier that loading into the back and no roof rack to hassle with (I like the car's clean lines)

The rack is made by Hollywood racks, but I don't know the model number. They may not make it anymore since I've had it almost 10 years. But I retrofitted it with Yakima Glass Hatch Hooks part # 2612. The "hooks" should work with any rack that uses the standard 1 inch straps. I've been using this for over a year and no problems, but I would recommend putting a soft cloth under the rack where it rests on the body just to protect the pain from slight rubbing.

i didnt know straps like the saris hatch huggers or the yakima hooks existed, which I'm gonna get for my tC. if anyone is looking for a solid and durable trunk rack, I recommend the Thule 910 (2 bikes, 911 for 3 bikes). my wife and i use it on her mazda3 all the time and now I'm gonna use it on my tC with those saris/yakima straps. dont buy those cheap $45 racks from target or walmart, which are too flimsy for highway speeds. I got mine for $79 (free shipping and no tax to California). I thought about a roof rack, but it wasnt worth spending $300-400 (with 2 bike attachments) given I dont ride that much.
