Default Epic Fail - Hatch strut replacement

So......

I needed new gas hatch lifts. Found some great ones called Strong Arm.

$32 shipped from Amazon.... woohoo! Very happy and looking forward to keeping the hatch from slamming on my neck during the winter.

Today, I go to replace them. I read on the reviews about propping the hatch up with a stick. So I grab a broom and wedge it in to the interior handle grab.

So far so good.

pull the left one off and install the new one. Eezy peezy.

Notice how strong this new one is..... great!

As I go to pull the right one off, I figure this new one will hold the weight of the hatch up.

I pull one end of the right strut off and - wham!

The whole hatch comes down with the gas lift outside the channel - shatters the glass and CHA-CHING! $300 glass repair.

I reach down, pick my jaw up from the driveway and walk into the garage for a beer.

Not only did it break the glass. It left some nice damage to the hatch frame and rear panel.

Glass is all risk for an insurance company. Give them a call, it is probably covered since it is an accidental loss. save you some money.
