Default hatchback glass cracked and shattered for no reason...help?

so i was leaving the hardware store when i opened the driver's side door to get in and i hear this loud popping sound. look at my hatchback glass and there is a crack from the top left down to the middle of the hatchback with glass starting to cave in. the entire piece of glass spidered. checked to see if someone shot it out...nope...no bullets in the car (thank god since i was right there) and no baseballs, rocks or other throwables. simply put, the glass shattered on it's own accord. has anyone had any trouble with this at all???? i have to take it to the dealership tomorrow and explain to them that this must be some kind of manufacturer's defect since there's no way in hell I did it. please any help would be rad. in the picture you can see like a "fault line" at the top of the hatchback where the glass cracked all the way across. email me at
erikkah@winntech.com or anti_erikka@yahoo.com if you have heard of this type of thing happen... thanks all!

So ... it just like shattered, eh? That' weird and I have always been super scared of that since tCs have like continuous glass from front to back. Maybe you left the rear defrost on too long sometime before and maybe it messed with the glass...? I dunno, or maybe it was slammed to hard in the cold and got a stress crack ... lots things. Sucks that that happened though, I am really sorry. Hope you can get it replaced! Good luck!

I’ve seen that before (not on a tC). Glass is actually a liquid (a very viscous liquid), and anytime you have a piece as large as the one on the hatch of a tC, and it’s curved, it runs the risk of buckling under it’s own weight. It usually happens on older model cars though. That may not be what happened to yours; just a little something one of my college professors told us. It sucks anyway.

^^When you have stuff like that, and you make a claim, doesn't it go up an **** load? I might just have sucky insurance though, lol! I wish I had low deductibles ...

i have only had the car since mid august and it is garaged so i haven't used the rear defrost but maybe once or twice tops. it was also warm today, with the actual event occurring at 57 degrees at 7 pm. thanks for the input! i need all the support i can get before i face the general manager at toyota tomorrow.

That is too weird. Good thing you didn't get shot at or anything, I hope you get it sorted out. On a more lighthearted note-

More glass breaking = another tC recall = another Scion "sorry" gift = another 1/18 scale tC for everyone!

I love the whole "This car falls apart", "imagine if you would have been inside" stuff If he would have been inside.. what would have happened? Nothing. And This, unfortunately, can happen to any car. I have heard of jeeps rear windows spontaneoulsly shattering on the dealer floor, hondas side windows mysteriously doing it, etc. Sounds like you were the unlucky recipient of some bad glass. I would think the dealer should take care of it under warranty.
