Maaco really wasn't too bad from my experiences.

I have a vehicle painted about once a year (I restore jeeps in my spare time), and the best I'm finding (with no body work, and me stripping off all the stuff that isn't getting painted: lights, fender flares, etc etc) is still costing me $2500. That's for a full vehicle minus engine bay, single color, and at a place that gives me a discount.
I've been quoted upwards of $4k from some places.

Since I actually *show* my jeeps at various car shows (places its not uncommon to see $40,00-50,000 restorations on some cars), there's no way a $300 paint job would cut it. When I have a car painted, I want the paint to be 100% perfect: no drips, runs, orange peel, overspray, nothing. It shoudl basically look like it came right off the facotry floor, period, no exceptions. Not everyone is like that though. Some people are okay with the stuff maaco is noted for: overspray, drips, etc.
Most cars that have been painted/repaired, I can tell from 10 feet away. If my paint ever came back from the body shop looking like that, I wouldn't hesitate to send it back. But that's also why I've had been invited to show a few jeeps at Carlisle and Hershey, because the jeeps come out showing like they are 98+ out of 100 point show cars. And to get a paint job like that, around NoVa, anyhow you're looking at at least $4K.

LOL, Maaco!!
I have a friend that works in a paint shop here in Las Vegas, he paints anything I want for the cost of the paint. He is the one that everyone around here goes to for custom paint jobs. I think its normaly $4000 or so for the job. I dont know much about paint but what he does looks premo. He painted some guys hood 2 colors and it wraped inside outside and even under the holes on the bottom of the hood...
