Is it true that carbon fiber gets sun damaged easily? I've been wanting one of these for a while but was told by a friend they would be destroyed in the hot new Mexico sun out here.

Yeah you have to get it clear coated to protect it from the sun or it will start to look yellow-ish..but if you get it clear coated every 6 months you should be fine

You clear it once, not every 6 months and this assumes it isn't gel coated. Now you should wax it that often though.

oh ok yeah i've heard that wax can damage the carbon fiber?

Ive had my carbon hood, wing, and bumper for over a year and it still looks just as good as day 1. I wax them every month. Never had to clear coat any of it yet even with the random weather TX gets.
