I'll have to call my local dealership and tell them about this one...

The last time I had it in, they said it was my license plate holder and they applied some foam stuff, which by the way I don't know what it was supposed to do....

I was going to take apart the panels to see if it was the wire harness dangling, but haven't gotten around to it yet, maybe tonight....but I definitely want to see them replace those rubber stops, as mine are pretty small AND are hitting the screws...

Any dimensions on the old rubber stops vs. the new ones?

Ok, so I did some more thorough looking into the rattle this morning. And I'm a bit concerned. I took the shock back off, and wiggled the hatch around and the rattle is still there.

Risking my head being chopped off if I drop the hatch I stuck my head into the hatch area and wiggled it, the sound is coming from the hinges at the top of the hatch, no joke.

So it would seem that the hatch shock replacement isn't going to do it unless they tighten up the hatch and the bigger bump stops might be the better solution. It might also explain why some people have had luck getting the latch adjusted. The goal is to not have the hatch flex so much in relation to the rest of the body.

Although I don't live near longo toyota I'm going to give the service dept a call and see if I can't find out what part numbers the bump stops they installed on CrazyTCs are.

I'll report if I get any success. Although I'm concerned there might be something wrong with the hinges. And I verified it's the hinges by using a broomstick against my ear to listen for it against the shock and against the hinge and it came through louder when pressed up against the hinge.

Stop laughing, it's a old mechanics trick to pinpoint strange noises coming from engines and trannies. Used it a lot on Saturns and my Bug. Kinda wierd to see "Why is he holding a broomstick up to his ear?". It's a cheap steathascope and you don't have to get your body near anything that can cut you up while the thing is running.

Ok, just talked to George down at Longo and he could not find crazyTCs RO that would have the part number on it but, he's going to get ahold of the shop foreman after they get out of a meeting and find out if they know anything about it and then give me a call back.

They certainly seem friendly and genuinely want to help me out. As soon as I hear I'll post something.

Can you tell I want this rattle GONE!

Hey all,
I'm in Scion servive dept. I believe it's a 2 part fix.
The struts for the hatch, I've not yet replaced.
On the bottom area....
the 2 plastic rings, with screws in the center, should be removed.
Next flip them over and add a rubber o-ring around the bottom half.
Re-install the parts, and do not over tighten!
Only screwing into a plastic insert.
This has worked well for me, and it's a quick fix.
Hope this helps out,
xAScionicle

Don't bother pulling the hatch apart for the wiring harness, it won't fix it. See here:

All that work for nothing.

More followup, according to my dealership they're a "A" part which means they can get them by the next day. Cost is $2 each. You need to order two as they do not come as a pair.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll be rear hatch rattle free.

Nice job Thread.

Now should I complain and get them to give me the parts for free...or just pay the 4 bucks and be done with it?

Depends on how much $4 is worth to you. It's not worth $4 for me to possibly have to haggle to get them to eat the cost and I don't want to ruin my reputation there of being a easy going guy. And going that route has never caused me to get bad service, in fact it's gotten me much better service then the other people in the service drive getting beliggerent at the service advisors.

Thanks for part #. I tried putting some foam tape around the stopper to build it up some and that did NOT work at all to stop rattle. So I am hopping bigger stoppers work better. Only $4 so not much wasted if it does not work. I am also having the struts done when parts come in.

The "O" ring addition to the bottom piece sounds interesting.

Thanks for post. Along with the O-ring do you also suggest replacing the rubber stoppers with part # that was just made available for $4??
