The "O" ring addition to the bottom piece sounds interesting.

Yeah, I tried building up my stock ones with 3 layers fo felt tape last night and it didn't help a bit. I've gotten so into this that I now hear the rattle when OPENING the hatch and I can make it rattle with the car standing still.

If the new "stays" and rubber cushions don't quell this I'm going to try some teflon spray on the hinges and if that fails start having the service dept deal with it but, I can't see how they would be able to change the hinges, the lower mount looks welded to the body.

I also think I need to stiffen the body by putting in a strut tower brace now that I've lowered it as when going over bumps the body is flexing enough to hear the roof pop.

Really, I think most of these problem are attributable to the all glass roof and the torsional rigidity of the car being more like a convertible but perhaps not reinforced quite as much as it should be.

Thread, sorry for not knowing but are you the one who has the Strut TSB done at LONGO for the hatch rattle? Someone had it done and was wondering if the hatch rattle is still gone???

One poster (actual service guy) recommended putting a rubber O ring in the frame part of the body where the hatch comes down. Think you would unscrew it, put the O ring in, then the regular piece, and the screw down (but not too tight). I am getting the TSB done, bigger rubber stoppers, and the O ring. Hopefully that will take care it.

Mine has not gotten to the point like yours where you can make it happern at will.

CrazyTC is the gentleman who got his TSB done at LONGO. I'm waiting for the struts to get to my dealer to have the TSB done on my car.

BUT, I got the "cushions" at lunch that I ordered yesterday that CrazyTC said cured his problem. Unfortunately it didn't cure mine

Hopefully it's the combination of the new shocks for the hatch or stays as the TSB calls them and the new cushions that will rid me of the rattle.

But, for the group, here is a pic of the old (on the left) cushion and the new (on the right) cushion. As you can see the new one is significantly taller than the old one. Don't forget to take into account where the actual seat is on the new one.

Anyways, pic:

Let's hope the struts fix it for me and that this fix is indeed a 2 step process.

And it's not like I'm obsessed about this or anything

Thread,

Are you also going to try to put the "O" rings in? That might also help where the stopper hits. Looks like you just take out the screw, insert the O ring underneath and then screw back on.

Nah, not going to try that, seems like too much of a hack. Plus if the new cushions didn't fix it I don't think the extra few milimeters the o-ring would get me would make much of a difference.

If it's not the stays, then it's the latch needing to be adjusted and if it's not that then I'll try some teflon spray on the hinges. And if that does not work I'll get a BMW. Joking on the BMW bit but, the rattle is obnoxious I'm not talking about sosmething you can barely hear, it's bad enough that when I'm on my mobile phone using my headset people ask me what's rattling.

For me, I am still waiting for dealer to get parts which are part of this TSB. Not sure if struts will do the job but worth a "free" shot.

Called the dealer and my new bigger stoppers are in and the parts for the struts (TSB=free) are in? Will get the stoppers tomorrow and struts next week. I will report back with verdict. IMHO, I will still have rattle but worth the little money for these two "fixes".

Thanks CRZYTC. Mine just came in and I do think it is helping the rattle. Will know more tomorrow after a good test drive. Pretty cheap fix. Still getting the TSB-struts done next WED. Can't hurt.

I never read this thread until now so I should have told you guys what we found out. The hatch strut problem came about by guys removing the hatch struts and the noise went away. They incorrectly assumed it was the struts making the noise. The hatch is very heavy and the weight alone, without the struts, will usually stop the noise. This is what threw them. The hatch itself is making the noise as it works in its opening. We take the rubber cushions on the side off and shim them out with 2 oil drain plug washers per side and the noise disappears. Cheapest and easiest field fix I know of yet.

lord sake, so you have removed the smaller OEM rubber cushion on each side, added two washers to each individual cushion, and then stuck these presumably three pieces that make one LARGE cushion together and the rattle is fixed?
If thats the case then just spending the 4 bucks on one LARGER cushion is achieving the same result via a one piece unit .
I think I summarized this correctly, my rattle is only about 1 percent of the time, but I do look forward to NEVER EVER hearing that crap again

Wow, yet another fix to the hatch rattle. I think we are up to 20 fixes for this hatch rattle but none seem to be the 100% absolute fix. I just tried the $4 bigger rubber stoppers on the end and that might have helped a little.

Sometimes the rattle is better all by itself and I think it has to do with the way (easy/hard) on closing the hatch and how it latches.

Getting the struts done on WED. For me the hatch rattle is not that big as I usually have music on. I really just want to see if it can be fixed as people have put out over 20 fixes for this thing. Getting rather comical at this point.

I dont think we're talking about the same cushion. I'm referring to the square shaped black pieces on the SIDE of the hatch. Shim them out with 2 drain plug washers . I have done a few of these and never had a come-back. And the price is right.

So I sprang for this $5 fix and came away with only partial satisfaction. The smaller occasional rattles are gone. You know, the ones that seem temperature-related or the ones purely driven by my emotion of the day. So for that, I'm thankful for this discovery. However, now I am able to clearly hear the larger, more consistent rattle/clunk that sings out over every other bump in the road. After all my research on this topic, I'm fairly confident it's the hatch struts, even though my VIN is outside of the range listed on the TSB. I'll take it in soon and report back. Meanwhile...back to cranking my tunes...

Kevin,

Exactly what I have going on. I would say about 98% of the time I get some sort of rattle, the other 2%- nothing. Just depends on the mood of the hatch.
I too close the hatch very easy and sometimes it makes a difference.
I'm trying to order the part for the larger rubber cushions (TOY 90541-09080) on line with my dealer.

We'll try this first.

Let me know how the larger rubber cushions do. For me, I just made a trip to WVA and the rattle is just as bad as it was with the smaller cushions. What seems to work for me is to take a sweatshirt and lay out each sleeve on the plastic with a break at where the latch is. This seems to give a "tighter" hatch fit. Get the strut TSB on Wed so wondering how they will do. Least my hatch rattle is usually not too bad.

Good luck.

Kevin
