Stupid Cops and Smoked Tail Lights
#21
Yeah, i don't think cops care so much, if you can see the lights through the tint. I got pulled over for my windshield tint one night about how dark it was and the cop looked over my car for other illegal things and found nothing, so he didn't care about the tails.
Oh and th funniest part is that my windshield wasn't tinted!! He argued with me because he felt stupid, so then he just gave me a speeding ticket instead. i was so ____ed. fought it and won some money back. But i guess what im trying to say is that, chances are that you won't be pulled over or ticketed for tinted tails. But thats not a guarantee

Up here in Upstate NY, you won't get harassed. Now if I was still living in NJ, I'd be pulled over 5x in one day.
I've been stoped at one of those "cops checking inspection stickers" and a cop yelled at me for not having a front license plate (which I had a good excuse for), and told me I can't have a tinted license plate cover on the back. He said NOTHING about my tinted tails.

it's illegal down here and probably in many other states because you are modifying a DOT/SAE approved lamp which then makes it non DOT/SAE compliant making it illegal. Most cops MAY not know or care about it but just be prepared for a ticket and not blame the cop for being "stupid" or a "dick" for ticketing you for it. not saying this mod is good or bad, but those should know this is probably illegal and is their own fault if they so happen to get a ticket.

When in doubt assume everything fun you do to or in your car is illegal ;)
If you are really really worried about whether or not your car will pass inspection or not look at the inspection criteria. Most states have vague and contradicting language, leaving the decision to the individual inspector. The spirit of most inspection laws has to due with rear visibility, color of the light output, and to a lesser degree the functionality of the reflectors. With our 30% standard smoke taillight kit the tc lights themselves are still red (dark red) and taillights & reflectors still meet appearance and reflectivity - just take a photo of them installed with the flash set and see what you get. With our darker 20% Stealth Smoke kits the tc taillights are still red (very dark red wine red) and although not as bright as with our standard kit still light up quite well. Does that mean you would never have any issues and absolve you of personal responsibility, heavens no.
If you get caught doing something stupid and happen to get the book thrown at you will probably find a laundry list of complete obscurity.

Oh yeah, my bad. I forgot because you had your windows tinted that you would know all about smoked tails. Tint companies gauge their tint just as you explained, but not everyone goes off that basic principle outside of that industry.
For example Bluebat uses a 10 scale such as 6/10th's and 4/10th's.
But what this person has is 35% Charcoal Lamin-x kit which is a 17 mil high impact resistant film.
20% smoked allows for 83% of the light to still come through
35% Dark Smoked aka Charcoal allows for 70% light to still come through.

^That's true.
Maybe you guys just misunderstood each other. But it's okay because we are one BIG HAPPY SCION FAMILY!

35% + 70% = 105%.....????

And yes we're a family. But really, who's family doesn't bicker?

stupid IMO.. they are both doing exactly the same thing. so why the differnece in how its rated? i beleive tinting was done to windows b4 tails ever thought about it..
no matter the way you cut it, they SHOULD both be measure the same way.. why the difference?

You are right they Should be...... but they arent. Simple answer they are made in entirely and for two different types of industries. You are correct about the smoked tails being used after window tint, but that was stumbled across from a different industry. The film was already being used in different applications when it was found it could be used as a light protection,

cops and inspection are two different problems. cops are dumb when it comes to small things like that and inspection stations will most likely notice. so dont worry bout the po-lice but worry about getting a sticker on your winshield in 2010 (which most of us wont be...at least not from a DMV).
