Do a search on this and you will see other posts. Some have scientific explanations. The bottom line is we are running modern small engines that only need 87 Octane. Here is a post from earlier today:

the last guys right search but in short the octane rating isnt performance. the higher the octane the higher you can compress the gas without self combustion. our cars aour 9.6:1 compression so you only need 87. for somthing like 11:1 you would need 98 octane.

it only really matters if you have force induction... because compression helps boost (i think) or if your running an european that needs the higher compressed gas... but 87 is good like the above two said. i think higher runs cleaner with the additives... but im not too sure on that

read up one of the threads that was posted here. octane dosent really make a diff but does the brand actually make a diffrence? i usually pump Sunoco or BP. shell and mobil are overpriced and buy from the middle east. i dont find any logic in buying gas from an area of the world that would rather see me dead than alive.

Sorry, this has been beat-to-death over the past few months.

Scion/Toyota designed our vehicles to run correctly on 87 octane.

Scion/Toyota recommend using only "Top Tier" detergent gasolines.

Here, again, is a quick link to a very recent thread covering some
of this information:
