ACT 6 puck clutch gone. Help me decide what to do!!!
i installed the ACT TY4-HDR6 (6 puck, unsprung) and put about 7500 miles on it. just a couple days ago while i was driving, i wasn't able to shift into 3rd. i had to pump the clutch and was able to shift. i had no problems getting into 4th or 5th. while i was cruising in 5th, i heard a horrible loud high pitched grinding noise and my car failed to move.
in the end, i towed the car to my friends shop and removed the transmission to see the damage. looked at clutch disc and there was plenty of meat left. upon closer inspection, imagine our surprise when we saw that the clutch disc splines were completely gone...shaved away!
ACT's site it states that the unsprung clutch disc has a shorter spline life than a sprung clutch disc, but i only put on about 7500 miles!!!
everything else was in PERFECT condition: pressure plate, release bearing, flywheel, splines on shaft. no visible damage to anything else.
i'm not sure if it was a manufacture's defect, but i'm wondering what i should do now.
should i:
a) Think it was a defect and buy another ACT 6 puck unsprung disc
b) Buy a ACT 6 puck sprung disc
c) Go with an entirely new clutch kit...i was thinking Competition Clutch
one more thing...i know how to drive stick and i did the recommended 500 mile break-in period when i first installed it.
i'll have a pic of the damaged clutch disc once my friend takes a pic.

power wise, i only have bolt-ons (I/H/E), but i'm readying the car for a turbo which is why i installed the ACT clutch kit.
i do some "spirited driving" and drive hard every once in awhile.

Well first off, you definitly should NOT run an unsprung hub on a non track or race only car, 2nd that lifespan is really short even for an unsprung, and 3rd I would not be suprised if you have actual tranny damage once you install the new unit. shredding the splines on the disk should still allow you to go into 3rd.

i should also state that i plan to track the car...but i see your point since it's a daily driver right now...or was anyway.
Garage1217,
i really hope there isn't any tranny damage. that's the tranny i bought from you last year and installed the LSD...

I'd go Competition Clutch as their stuff is solid. Plus they actually have customer service unlike ACT which took 6 months to warranty a disc I had. Who wants to be without a car for 6 months? How much power you making that you need such an aggressive clutch? I made 340 WHP on a Competition Clutch stage 2.

^ currently NA with bolt ons, but aiming for at least 300 WHP with a turbo...probably no more than 350 WHP. i know clutches are rated by torque capacity, but my clutch decision is based on the dyno sheets i've seen in forums.
i admit it was a dumb idea to go with the 6 puck solid disc, but my goals were a bit different at the time of install.
so now i'm looking at either a 6 puck sprung or solid face street disc. though i'd like to go with a new kit like CC, finances are kinda tight especially with a turbo looming in the very near future.
i just need a disc that will hold whatever torque comes with 300 - 350 WHP. my car is a daily driver that i plan to track and race occasionally.
thanks for any suggestions!

Umm without a good clutch all that money you spend on the turbo kit is kind of pointless so don't cheap out. You can go Competition Clutch Stage 2 and be fine. It is a full face carbon kevlar disc so easier to drive and lasts a hell of a lot longer. If you want to go segmented their stage 4 is good as well but considering your modest power and torque goals and budget I'd go stage 2. Car Candy has them for sale in the vendor forum.
