Am I getting screwed?
Alright guys I think I am getting screwed.. cliff note story is clutch slipping..start car one day starts and stalls out... then will not start.. think cause of TOB and slipping clutch... have taken to transmission shop were they refer me to another shop cause they don't want to pull transmission with not starting.. well i have to taken to shop.. now they say that head has bent valves.. so they wanna charge 450 to pull head.. then take to machine shop where they say that all but one valve was bent and will cost 450 to fix.. and now they say have to replace vvt and timing chains and few other parts.then all the labor to put back together.. which now adding up to almost 3000 in parts and labor.. This really is putting me in bind and is alot of money and thats not even putting the clutch in car... does this even sound right?

Take the exhaust manifold off and check for yourself. If they're saying all valves are bent, when you take the exhaust manifold off it will be obvious. If thats the case, there price is def in the ballpark. You could always just swap in a junkyard motor yourself for under $1000 for the motor if you have the experience/time.

They are trying to rip you a new one. You can get a used engine for around $1k and have it swapped in for another $400-500. If you are located anywhere in Norcal PM me, I can help you get things figured out.

Umm $400-500 for a motor swap?? Pulling the motor is like 8 hrs on the book, and another 8 to put the new motor back in - thats 16 hrs of shop labor minimum. The going labor rate is $65-100/hr depending where youre at so youre looking at $1k minimum in labor only to pull and replace the motor and thats without shop supply fees/fluids/etc. $400-500 is good for a "mechanic friend helping you do it at your house" rate, but dont expect to pay that at a shop, to be honest, id expect to pay around $1500 total in shop labor + misc shop expenses, in addition to what you spend on the engine.

I do this sort of thing myself most of the time, so I speak from experience. I only pay a shop when I don't have them time or desire to work on one of my cars.

Well "I did this sort of thing" for a living, so I know how much its supposed to cost. Its not ripping you off, its a fair rate, call around to any reputable shop and I promise youll get a number close to that. In fact $65/hr is CHEAP by todays standards - and I looked it up - Pulling and replacing the motor in an 07+ tc, swapping the transmission and other needed parts over, plus refilling fluids is 17 hrs on the book. Im not here to say you cant get it done cheaper, Im just trying to tell you that it is a fair price from a reputable mechanic's shop, and its not someone trying to rip you off, they're just trying to make an honest days living. By the time the shop pays its overhead, pays the front end employees, and pays the mechanic doing the work $15-20/hr, theres not alot left.
