ok so my question ever since i bought the tC in 2005 is why is shifting so stiff with or without a short shifter. i've driven cars like bmers, infinitis, acura/hondas and find it so easy to shift in them w/o any mods. i've heard that acuras have a thing called "hydraulic assist". is there anything else we can do to make shifting easier in the tC? truthfully i'm used to the tC w/ my twm short throw n weighted skunk2 **** but since i just drove my friends rsx the other day for an hour, it felt so light so the question popped into my mind again. any thoughts? are any other mods possible other than the short throw?

Take your shifter apart and grease the ____ out of it.

I have them on my tC along with the TWM stage II short shifter, I've noticed more precised and less sloppier shift, this does not completely get rid of the problem you're talking about, but it helps.

Ya, the bushings are a good idea but wouldn't make it easier to shift. The overall shift just feels better.

The transmission fluid is another good idea. Go for something synthetic.

my main complaint isnt the shifter making it hard for smooth shifts its the clutch and the transmission.

get a better clutch and put some redline tranny fluid and you should feel the difference from what i hear. also the clutch stop mod helps as well from what people say on here

i personally have the Doc I short throw shifter with the bushings and that helped out alot as did my DME ETD

here is an idea that I have been playing around with. When you reach to shift simply push or pull the lever slowly. You will find that it glides right in with no hesitation. You have to think about what is happening when you bang those gears.

Honestly everything listed above should of been taken into consideration when this car went into production. Every car has its flaws but somedays this gets pretty disappointing. You would think after 4 to 5 years Scion would've tweaked the trans/eng. mounts along with the shifter assembly.

The shifter and shifting is just fine. Ive never had a problem with my stock shifter.

The notion that the stock shifter is stiff is... nonsensical. The OEM assembly has so much slop and flop in it, it's like stirring a pot of soup. Absolutely no feeling of connection between the shifter and the drivetrain-- it's like a video game shifter... a very, very bad video game shifter.

Any mods you do to the shifter or bushings will make the action stiffer and more direct-feeling. Which is what you want, if you actually want to drive the car. If the few inches of movement required to move from one gear to another is too much for you, there's always those fancy transmissions that do the shifting for you... what are those called again?

i say the tc is bout right, of course its not as good as infinities and acuras but those are of different class, the suggestion above will make it so much better and not that expensive at all

just get a sort shifter, change the bushings, and change your tranny oil to redline. Also get a new clutch and flywheel eventually.

just be happy that you drive a toyota built car now. try to drive and shift a spec v tranny, and i bet you will love your car again. spec v might have a 6 speed on them but dang, 1st gear pops most of the time.... very hard to shift from gear to gear, and its hard to get into 6th gear. if you want to shift w/o any effort, try a volvo.
