HELP wit my megan setup
#23
1) As mentioned, the smell is from the removal of the catalytic converters. It will stink until you replace them, or custom-weld on high-flow units, which may or may not work.
2) The noise pitch and tone may change SLIGHTLY, but the rasp will not. The second function of catalytic converters is to "soften" the exhaust pulses. If you truly want to get rid of rasp, ditch the aftermarket header and put the stock unit back on.
3) Replacing more stock pieces will only make things worse, so the addition of the axleback will only make things louder.
4) If you want to get rid of rasp and volume, and aren't willing to put stock pieces back on... then you have to spend more money. Resonators are "in-line mufflers" that function as mufflers do, decreasing noise at the expense of power. They do not decrease noise as much as the stock rear muffler, but they dont lose as much power either.
They cost on order of $100ish, and must be custom welded on.
---
Most of us who've decided to put the stock header back on have been happy with that decision. I hated my car for the 3 months that I had the megan header, and subsequently GAVE it away.

i would personnally ignore the smell and weld on an Aero25 resonator, it seems to be really popular and should work with your setup!
look for a member Tceeder, he has headers, mid, and a megan OE-RS and he is rasp free! i belive he has 2 resonators, i cannot remember, im going to look for his thread and give you the link!
and rasp will alsmost never go away 100% but you can get rid of it almost completely below 4k rpms which is what you want, rasp is no big deal when your stomping on it IMO

i got the megan header megan mid and tananbe concept G axle back it's a little raspy at time's but most of the time is sounds great with really no rasp and the smell goes away after a while it did for me at least gonna get the s pipe also

here is the thread i was refering to!!
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...highlight=rasp
read it from beginning to end, the pics dont work, but you will get the idea
he has strup headers>megan spipe> megan mid pipe w/aero25 resonator> megan oe-rs axleback
it worked for him, im sure it will work for you!

the rasp wont go away in fact it will get worse with the oe-rs, trust me. i installed my strup header, megan s-pipe, megan midpipe and megan oe-rs and had a little rasp around 3k.
i cut off both the megan resonators and had some good ones welded on, namely an Aero 25 where the small one was and then a 18" or so second resonator in the middle, dont remember the brand but any muffler shop will have one. it sound very nice now, not loud at all and zero rasp.
i see you live in weston, i'm in weston a lot. check out mad hatter muffler on 441 and griffin, they will make the car sound good.

Wow i'm late but anyway.
I recently installed Strup headers ---> Invidia Down pipe ---> Magnaflow Catback
I had a bunch of rasp and that gawd awful drone when driving down the expressway.
I started a thread here:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=248129
I ordered two different resonators a Magnaflow that is a total length of 28" and a Ultra Quiet Vibrant Resonator that was roughly 8 to 9" in length, I would have gone Aero 25 but the supplier was sold out at the time.
I decided to install just the Vibrant resonator and send the Magnaflow back and it made an entire world of difference. No more rasp and no more drone, it sounds awesome.
Here is a sound clip, its noise in the background of the after clip but still.
Before: http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2znx0sk&s=5
After: http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2zyfu4i&s=5
As for the cat and the smell, get yourself a quality high flow cat or if you prefer to leave the cat off just go with two resonators or one good quality one su.ch as Aero, Magnaflow or Vibrant.
BTW....everyone that has posted in this thread so far are the same ones that helped me with my setup and got it right for me. It only cost me $25 to have meineke weld in the resonator.

Thanks everyone, so do I need to by the resonator first or can I just go to the muffler shop and they'll put one on? Do u think it would be more than 150 and does it take long?

im sure the muffler shop has them, saves you the trouble of buying and waiting for shipping and such!
like i said though, install everything first then go from there! one step at a time!
