Everyonce in a while Ill take it out of D and but it in 2 and 3...just to pass people. Is this bad on the tranny?

it puts more stress on the tranny yes.. but i wouldnt necessarily say its a bad thing.

honestly, the tC has enough passing power that you dont need to do that, i would suggest you stop because its not a thing you should do everyday.

i only use the L-2-3-D while im racing so i can get full potential out of all the gears

yeah, i raced my friend for fun around this area where it's nothing but straight aways.. my friend is moving there and the streets are new so people barely pass it. but anyway.. i was expermenting with racing strictly on D gear and shifting from L-2-3-D.. the shifting of gears helped slightly. lol.

at what RPM's do you shift in between gears?

lol if it was bad to use the low gears they woudlnt have put them on there for you but just dont overdo it. i usually just start in 3rd (overdrive off) then switch to D when i run into high rpms and it works just fine.

i rev it up to 5-6k.. i try to hit redline on each gear and then shift.. i have beat alot of cars like that...

i do the same, always start in low gear let the rpms go up and shift just like you would a manual all the way till i get back to 3rd then put it in drive. in doing this when i race ive beat many cars i dont know it just feels right, engine sounds great especially the intake.

lol that's a GREAT way to wear out your transmission. The automatic transmission was not designed to shift like a manual. If it was I'm sure the manual would state somewhere "For great passing power, shift the car into the 2 or L positions." However it doesn't. If you need to pass, push your foot on the gas and let the car shift into a lower gear for you. The 2 and L gears are for driving up hills or towing when you need low end power and you're not going fast.

I tried L-2-3-D on the 1/4 mile track.... 2nd run.... it was slower. Just leave it in D.

1st run (D): 16.64, 2nd run (Shifted): 16.69.

the computer tells the transmission when to shift. It tells it to do so in hopes of not screwing up anything by overheating. By taking it out of D, all of this computer assistance is gone. By using l-2-3 instead of D, you run the risk of overheating the transmission and hurting something.

As said above, i'd only use the lower gears when you actually need them like for hills and such. otherwise, mash the gas and be done with it.

lol.. when you guys "shift" with the auto, do you let off the gas first between each gear or your foot is pressed on the pedal the whole time?

I let off the gas.. You could strip the gears if you don't.

the ecu adjusts to how hard you have the gas pedal pushed. if you have it all the way down it redlines it. if you have it slightly it adjusts accordingly.

yea manually shifting a automatic transmission is pretty bad...especially for racing since ur rpm's are gonne be up there... gonna cost u a new transmission in the future

just step on the pedal... the point of an auto is that it shifts according to driving needs

If you need power to pass somebody, press the gas, and the tranny will shift accordingly

stomp down on the pedal and let the transmission shift for you...otherwise you should've considered purchasing a 5sp to begin with

HAHAHA and then you just fed into it! this is the dumbest thing to do with a auto (well other than the poser who make their auto shifters look like manuals) you WILL wear out the gears VERY prematurly and when you get ____ed cause you jacked up your tranny and take it in to toyota, they will know what you did by how the tranny is worn and reject you from any warranty. your susposed to used those gears for steep declines ONLY read the damn book
