Default Is my motor blown?

Long story short, I miss shifted and overreved my engine to over 8k (I am estimating maybe 9 or 10k), clutched in as soon as possible but the damage had been done. My car idles fine and is drivable but now I can clearly sense a lack of torque and my engine is making a ticking noise. Sounds kind of like a diesel engine. What do you guys think is broken and how expensive would it be to get it fixed? Would the dealer fix it even though it was kind of my fault since I did miss shift? Should I just pretend to be a noob at the dealership? I am guessing the ecu will have logged the overrev and it won't be long before the dealer finds out that the engine is broken due to my miss shift. So let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance

As long as you don't have any mods to it, you should just take it in and see what they say. Just tell them it doesn't sound right and feels like it has less power. Couldn't hurt...

well, just go in and try not to act guilty. there was a guy who messed up his engine racing and got it covered under warranty. so not that i condone that kinda stuff, but yeah, so long as you don't have any mods on your tc, they might just look at it as a bad engine or whatever.

sounds like rod knock and you should have it towed to the dealer, dont drive it, you will make it worse.

if the rod was broken wouldn't my car not be drivable at all? I thought it was just something in the head, like a bent valve...

You more than likely floated a valve. dont drive the car. have it towed to a dealer and have them look at it.

You must have been racing in order to rev that high when you miss shifted. No the CPU will not erase when you disconnect the battery, and yes they will have it logged.

the head will have to come off, and the valves replaced at the least. Nothing else should be wrong. your looking around $ 1200 for parts and labor if not more if the dealer does it.

You could always go to a junk yard, find a tC, take there head and do it yourself. but changing the head on a tC is a 6 outta 10 exp level on a tC motor. The timing chain has to be removed, and unless the motor is pulled, removing the head sucks in the engine bay.

or it could be a spun bearing...just take it in and don't tell them about the miss shifting incident

Its more than likely a valve if its tiking like a diesel. If he were to spin a bearing, he wouldnt be driving to far after he misshifted

What kind of car do you drive? If it is a tC how do you think you hit somewhere in the 8k-10k range? The stock engine and stock ecu will not allow this. The most I have ever seen out of a stock tC is 6500. More info

Miss shift means that I downshifted to a gear too low for the speed that I was at. Ecu will cut the fuel only if I am in a gear and I floor it. As soon as I hit the redline the ecu will cut fuel to protect the engine from an overrev. However if I downshift to a gear too low I can mechanically overrev the engine and the ecu fuel cut off will not save me.

Drive your car in 5th gear cruising at 70mph....downshift it 2nd, will it stop at 6500rpm??? NO it will jump to 10K or whatever

So you think its just a bent valve right? A friend of mine has experience with rebuilding old bmw engines. TC's four banger shouldn't be much of a stretch right? The dealer would probably rape me alive with labor costs.

Id agree with the people who said its most likely a valve issue. A tick is usually caused by valves and its very possible that you bent a valve. You wont really know untill they tear into the motor and anything that we tell you here is going to be nothing more than speculation.
The computer cant protect the engine if you downshift to too low of a gear at too high of a speed. All the computer can do is cut the fuel and cut the ignition, but the transmission is still going to force the engine to spin at an rpm that could be high enough to damage the engine.
Id have it towed to the dealer and have them look at it. Maybe you will get lucky and they will fix it under warranty. Good luck.

with the exceptions of my 1st car that was given to me, I have only driven manual transmissions.
