Default Tach Problems

For the past couple months I have been having a problem with my tach. It first started with the needle jumping like crazy from 2000-5000-0-and back to where the motor was running. I have also been having a problem with it reading 0 when I start the car. Now it will stay on 0 for a few min before It will start working. Now I also have a remote starter on my car and it has worked flawlessly since I have had the car till now. Since it reads the tach signal to run the remote start it will not run if the tach isnt working. Any ideas from anyone before I take the car in for service?
