transmission woes (down shift to 3rd gear)
Hey guys,
I know there have been MANY threads about the grinding issue about first to second on cold starts, but mine relates to a 4th gear to 3rd gear down shift. I use to have the first gear to second gear problem that most 5speed owners have, but that was cured a year back or so with Redline MTX. This past winter, I notice that when the weather was cold (below 25-30F), I would get a serious crunch/grind when I down shifted normally from fourth to third. No other gears have this problem right now. All my up shifts are smooth, as well as down shift , other than the problem i have listed.
I just decided to take my car in this past Wednesday to have it checked by my local dealership where I go to school. For two days they tried to "replicate the problem" but could not. I came in today and tried to replicate the problems, which I did. It was slightly warmer so I had to actually try to make the noise by down shifting faster.
Conclusion from the tech assistant was that the noise/grind was not enough to warrant them to change their tranny. They were also trying to blame it on my short shifter and that I changed the fluid. They said since the problem only happens in the cold, they couldn't do anything until it started happening more often. What do they expect me to do? Wait until the transmission bites the dust? I plan on dropping the car off again next week when it is SUPER cold, hopefully they can make a conclusion from it.
What do you think guys? Anyone else have this problem? I'm kind of in the ranting mood because i'm distraught. My plans of going turbo in the summer are falling through the cracks. I know there is a problem, and I don't want to mask it with an oil any longer.
Thanks

I had the same problem, they also tried to blame it on my short shifter, but they eventually changed the tranny. I have since removed the short shifter and the new tranny is perfect so far with 5k on it already. Mine also did it when it was cold

i took off the short shifter and i called toyota about them not wanting to change the tranny. I guess toyota asked them for records stating I had a short shifter and they didn't have any. The dealership I was going to is supposed to be top of the line also, yet they told me to "stop going to the track" with the car. I don't care what anyone says dealerships are out to screw you if they can. It took them 4 tries to fix my engine noise and they insisted it was my fault until the toyota engineer told them they were doing something wrong and they finally did it right and I have no more problems now. Yet they never apologized and still have the demeanor of "its your fault." Sry for going off topic...
