Default turbo this

i hear all this talk of turbo tc's but nobodys posting personal accounts of owning one of them. im extremely interested in turboing my tC but am not familiar with tuning at all. i would be looking for information about price after not only the turbo kit, but the total amount of work that needs to be done to support a turbo comfortably and the cost this intails. Also, my friend has an M3 running 8psi on stock internals.... what could the tC run safely on stock internals and the horsepower it expects to put out. anyone with a turbo setup on scionlife that could help me out id appreciate it.

I dont see any reason why you couldnt run 8 psi on a good tune for the standard life of these engines. If TRD is has no problems releasing a dealer installed SC that doesnt void the warranty then the engines have to be fairly stout in stock form. A turbo will not damage an engine if it is installed and TUNED properly. It's people that start turning up the boost beyond the practical limits of what they have that blow engines. I see no reason why a tC couldnt hold 7-8psi without incident. Since my turbo kit goes on next week, we shall see.

I ran 2 different turbos on my 2002 Civic EX. At one point running 9psi on stock internals. I did bolt-on upgrades but never touched pistons, rods, etc.

A properly tuned setup with stock higher compression pistions can still make some decent results. Running a smaller turbo at lower boost levels will make for a very quick car on lower speed racing (turbo lag is the enemy, high boost being enemy of internals). My civic had a 9.9:1 Compression ration, daily driven at 7psi for over a year. And I went to the track no less than every other week.

The tC should handle boost even better. With higher displacement and lower compression, you can pull off a slightly larger turbo with a little bit more boost. Once again this comes down to tuning, which many people over look. You don't just add fuel up top to make up for the boost. Retard the ignition timing as necessary. There's just so much to adjust and modify there's almost no limit.

I'm very confident in running 8psi on my tC as a daily driver. The motor is very well built. My only concern is possible headgasket up the road (if I can't pull back my ignition timing a little) and a soon to be replaced clutch.

my 2 cents, sorry just venting...

vent all u want man...we all have our area of knowledge
one of mine isn't turbo's...i kno somewut about them, not a good chunk though

its good that ppl put in there opinions and thoughts and knowledge of these things, it will help out alot of ppl in the long run..

just from my experience, runnin on stock internals on ne car hasn't paid off---
my entire crew and cars for my company are turbo'd and aren't runnin stock internals..but then again they are all above 330+ hp

just my two cents from wut ive seen---id just play it safe and change them, but u don't have too

and yes..turbo lag is the enemy!!!!

so, the only thing that would need to be swapped would be the piston rods, heads, and a clutch? and what would a package upgrqade like this run price wise?

depends where u get the parts, who does the work, etc....
ACT and HKS r in works of high performance clutches and lightweight flywheels

i am not sure if they are done yet or not
ive had ACT clutches on my other cars---very good

From my experience you'll be passing that price. It depends on the cost of the kit, and quality of internals.

Labor for all that should be over a grand alone depending on the shop.

Pistons and rods should cost between 600-1100 depending on who you know or what you buy. Every kit is different, hard to perfectly match something.

Definitely above $5k I would think. Changing stock internals would not be necessary below 10psi. Toyota engines are bulletproof. My only concern with putting on a turbo would be how all the computers in the car react to it. I had a bad experience trying to turbocharge an '01 MR2. Tuning that thing with the stock ECU was just impossible. It almost required a full aftermarket EMS to get working properly. I'd like to turbocharge the Scion but until I hear from someone who's done it successfully I'm not even going to think about it.
