if a turbo has "shaftplay" what exactly does this mean and how bad is it?

Shaft play refers to the amount the shaft moves in and out, this will result in the turbo leaking oil and smoking as well as reduce the efficiency of the turbo. If the shaft only moves up and down, that is fine as most brand new turbos do this.

o someone had told me that side to side is ok but in and out is not good? is that right.

i think i needa new turbo.. jesus christ.. i cant catch a break..
