do s/c really shorten the life of a car??

there are so many factors involved with the life of an engine that i doubt there is a really accurate response. In short - it most likely will diminish it somewhat but the s/c is more than likely to fail way before the engine does depending on how it was taken care of and if you drive the poop out of it.
Oh and the s/c has a lot of reliability issues period.

any forced induction can shorten the life span of the engine...so can crappy driving though and a crappy driver hitting you on the freeway at 75...so you can choose your poison

But yea, with increased pressure in the cylinder and more stress on pinstons, rods, rings, bearings, etc, it's pretty obvious.

Essentially if you s/c and drive like Ms. Daisy your motor will last "long tine"
s/c and drive like speed racer your motor will likely last with the caveat that you must care and keep it properly maintained.

I'd offer that the weight of one's foot can affect the overall lifespan of any motor, regardless of N/A or 'blown'. You baby about any car and it could outlast your interest in it. Drive it like you really wanna drive it, and anything can lose some miles off it's life. I believe there is a difference between driving a car hard, and beating on one. Maintain it and enjoy it--otherwise why have one in the first place.
As for personal opinions everyone here will have one, based on their own ride, their own history, and even theories based on others' stories.
For us, we're at 50k on car, say 45k on sc; no beating, some hard (fun ) driving, and no issues.
And i'm sure most of us are the same--whatever we add for power mods soon is not enough. Then like an addiction you need more. And more. And so on.
THEN all of a sudden we wonder why we blew the darn thing up!

Unless you get a bad s/c that sends chunks of metal bearing down the intake, then the life of your engine is cut very short. However Toyota stands by their warranties and will replace both the s/c and engine under warranty thus resetting the engine life to new. YMMV
