When i was tuned, then tuner used 4th gear as well.
It is the closest gear to 1-1 ratio.

in the manual trans it is a direct 1:1 gear idk bout auto trans

Theoretically 4th is ideal. I have done back to back pulls in third and forth and havent seen any real difference in #s. I usually do it based on the wheel speed. If the car has overall gearing that runs much over 115mph in 4th I will use 3rd gear on street tires. Competition tires that are speed rated I will run in 4th.
Keep in mind that I have a Superflow Dyno that is loaded, so I can program the test to run a few seconds longer in 3rd so the turbo can maintain max boost.
