Default finally engine has called it quits

last night the motor finally took a poop on me... its def a ring or ring land

i plan on driving the car around for the next 2 months and then rebuilding it...

i believe the main factor in this situation is a faulty fic unit that wouldnt retard timing, thus allowing detonation

well my car was pulling 9.5 degrees of timing during 3800-4800 becaus ei was getting detonation....and still that didnt help, which leads me to assume my aem wasnt retarding timing like it should...

mike has experienced aem units that havent retarted timing too

How did you know you were getting detonation? And how did you know you weren't? You sure you didn't have sone sort of boost spike or something that caused it to go to lean? Or something else besides timing.

my car is very consistant, no boost spikes and no lean zone, it has always happened every sinc ei went anything above 6 psi i get detonations at 3800-4800 it sounds like little rice crispies popping in my engine bay, my tuner even noticed it and we prceeeded to retard timing there n no help so clearly the fic is failing

that sucks chunks!
but can you honestly say it was all the fic's fault? you did run untuned for a while, then you messed around with that safc thing for a bit too. your engine took a good beating with all your playing around.

i went with 10 psi...and it wouldnt detonate all the time it was a 1 every 90 pulls it would and it wasnt drastic....

anyways right now im just deciding wha bore to go with im thinking maybe 89 to be on the safe side

FIC = Failed Ignition Controller?

Sorry to hear about your bad luck Martin. Not to pour salt here but did you or your tuner measure the EGT after pulling all that timing? -9.5 degrees? If you had detonation-causing hot spots in the combustion chamber already, that might have made things worse. I realize that few people actually install EGT probes but you can get a pretty good idea from the primary O2's thermistor and a OBD scan tool. I'm not too sure about the accuracy of the temps reported but it will show increases and decreases in EGT. I recorded a high EGT of 1750F from the O2 with my first ECU-only setup and it scared me until I recorded the same EGT after going back to stock.

Anyway, I hope the damage is minimal and wish you good luck with the rebuild. Maybe WMI next time?
