If you had detonation-causing hot spots in the combustion chamber already, that might have made things worse. I realize that few people actually install EGT probes but you can get a pretty good idea from the primary O2's thermistor and a OBD scan tool. I'm not too sure about the accuracy of the temps reported but it will show increases and decreases in EGT. I recorded a high EGT of 1750F from the O2 with my first ECU-only setup and it scared me until I recorded the same EGT after going back to stock.

Anyway, I hope the damage is minimal and wish you good luck with the rebuild. Maybe WMI next time?

yea idk bout the whole timing thing i really dont care anymore...

damages are minimal just your average piston ring but i will be replacing rods pistons and bearings and installing a fuel system

let me get this straight

you drove around untuned for a while

you got tuned and it was detonating and you proceeded to raise boost and beat on your car

you cracked a ring landing and you are blaming it on an ECU that tons of people are using without cracking ring landings

you cracked a ring landing and are going to drive it around for 2 months? Make sure you get a new shortblock as well I feel bad for that cylinder wall

awesome thread

YES im blaming my fic it was un responsive as far at timin retard goes.... it happens learn some

its either a ring land or a ring and i dont really care as the car will literally see 200 miles in 2 months ...

awesome thread

Lol I you cracked a piston ring and keep driving it your eventually gonna keep eating through that cylinder wall and will probably have to not it more then .20 over.

I would be willing to bet the damage was done while driving untuned. You can get mild detonation which weakens the tops of the pistons. It turns the smooth piston dome into something that resembles the rough surface of the moon. The problem with this is that over time these rough spots can turn into stress risers. What then happens is these stress risers heat up much faster than the rest of the surface of the piston and create ignition. So what you were seeing was probably pre-ignition and not detonation. Pre-ignition is ignition of the air/fuel mixture before the specified timed event causing improper combustion and colliding flame fronts. However pre-ignition can lead to more severe detonation. Especially at higher RPM where you can't hear it. So this has been a long time coming.

What many people don't realize is that too much or too little timing will lead to detonation much like you stated here fred. However another thing that most people don't realize is that there is a direct correlation to the exhaust temperature and quality and completeness of the combustion. 1725*F is about as stoichiometric as you can get in terms of combustion. This temperature leaves as little un burned hydro carbons as possible. Meaning cleaner exhaust gas and better catalyst operation. These things are what the EPA wants. Running as hot as possible without detonation is the goal. And it should also be when making power. This is why you saw this on the stock ECU this is no surprise. However when tuning it's only half the information.

During tuning you need to consider three pieces of information.

1. Air/Fuel ratio
2. Raw knock values
3. Exhaust Gas Temperature

These three pieces of information will help you make the most power, the safest with the given fuel you are using. There is an article I typed up and included some basic links for more information on tuning with EGT. It's very helpful, you seem to have a pretty good understanding of it. Just know it's ok to get warm. Just try not to go over 1725*F sustained, that's playing with fire, no pun intended

You guys are brutal. How many of you built and installed your own custom turbo kit on a very limited budget when you were 21? We all make mistakes along the way and we learn from them.

AFAIK Cburgl34 only has one car and now it has expensive internal engine damage. A little compassion maybe?
