Default GAS and TIRES

Hello, I have a 2005 scion tc with about 51,000..

I have two problems with the car so far.

Poor gas mpg. I am getting less then 300 miles to the tank. Im getting about 265 to 274. I do live in the city and the highway isn't any different but I am wondering why it's soo low.

The other thing is my scion blows through tires like it's nothing. I spent a good ammount of money on tires and the car over a three month span blew 4 tires. Whats the cuase?

get an alignment.. balance your tires.. get your chassis checked.

It sounds like you're causing more than normal friction - tires are wearing cuz of that and the extra friction requires your car to work harder to drag your car around..

I'm going to say that it has nothing to do with forced induction so why post it here???

also, try keeping your tires properly inflated.

IBTL! reset your ecu, check tire pressure, dont mash on the pedal, get an alignment.

If for some reason this doesn't work then disconnect your negative battery cable, leave off for 10 min, reconnect and let idle for 10 min. so your ecu will be cleared out and relearn everything.

hey,

i had the same issue with 250ish miles per tank.

but recently i figured out the cause

what the problem was is an inaccurate gas gauge.

say ur on empty, but reallly empty and the needle is under the last notch, almost to the point where u think u used almost all your reserve.

when u go to fill up, do u ever wonder why u dont get 14 gallons?

and why the needle reads ABOVE Full when u start the car after the fill up.

the gas gauge is inaccurate by 3 gallons, thats what ive found in my calculations with my car.

so try to do the gallons bought/miles dirven method.

instead of just watchin the needle go down

I would give this guy a little more credit than this..

I hope he knows we don't have only a 12gal tank (usually what we end up filling when we first hit gas light).

I average 315-320 miles when i first hit the light.. and I drive fast on the freeway - 90-100 ish (no I'm not reckless.. I do take great care).

Why do people measure economy by how far they go on a tank? Just figure out MPG, its much more accurate, and means a lot more. Not to mention the fact that I almost never go below 1/2 tank anyway.

x2, its better on the car to not let the tank go dry.

what's the reason for this? and what do you count as "dry"?

Its because when you run the tank dry you pick up all the contaminants and gunk in the fuel tank and it clogs your fuel filter. (Most people who follow this philosophy fill up before going below 1/4 tank)

As for the MPG's go, with my normal driving 50/50 highway I typically get around 22-24 mpg. If you fill up at 1/4 tank mark you typically have like 225-250 miles on the trip meter. In the past week or so SL has really surprised me that so many people have no clue how to calculate mpg when its so simple. 1. Fill tank 2. Reset trip meter 3. drive around alot 4. Fill tank to full 5. Divide miles on trip by gallons put in the car.
Easy as pie...yum pie

I'm sure people know how.. in fact when I first replied to this thread I had to erase what I had said because I started to talk about mpg.. and the original poster was talking about total miles.. it's a little different. The original poster mentioned being below the E mark.. that means the gas light had already been on for a while.

Ah, he doesn't mention anything about about the fuel light, but I hope his alignment is way off otherwise hes got some serious issues.

OP: Did you buy this car new or used? If you got it used, did you check the vehicle history? There could be something the person you bought it from didn't tell you.
