Default Get more power but still pass visual inspection and SMOG?

Hi folks,

I thought I'd just brainstorm with ya'll. What kind of mods would you do to your engine if you wanted to still pass visual inspections AND smog. I/H/E is out (naturally). It's got to be sneaky. I'm guessing changing the engine internals. The ony things I can think of are;

TRD Supercharger
lightweight / underdrive pulleys
Port and polish

I can't really think of anything else... Hmm maybe bore out the block a bit more for more displacement? I dunno.

zpi stage 1 head, header is not out...just conceal it with a custom mount to mount the stock heat shield over it, exhaust is not out if you keep the 2nd cat in place, S/c, P&P, blueprint the block, standalone ECU, pulleys if it's concealed, let's review...

1. ZPI stage 1 head
2. Header concealed under stock heat shield
3. Catback Exhaust
4. Standalone ECU
5. Pulleys
6. S/C
7. P&P
8. Have the block blueprinted and up the compression ratio

But if they don't do a visual, anything that keeps the CEL off and a high flow cat should pass smog, right?

I think mine would pass a visual inspection, most people who see my car don't even notice the cai because it's wrinkle black.

In theory, maybe. IF the guy isn't paying attention. If he doesn't know what he's looking at. Do you have a O2 sensor in there somewhere?

ZPI stage 1 head

Have the block blueprinted and up the compression ratio - I assume you mean have the whole block re-made? With a longer draw? Won't that make the block too tall? I guess there might be some room to futz around. You could also bore out the block instead and put in bigger piston heads too.

visual inspection is always a part of the smog checks

you dont need to change the size of the block to raise compression. you could 1.use high compression pistions, 2. get a thiner head gasket, 3. go forced induction.

Then how do you pass smog with a turbo?

IIRC not until 2010 or 2011 here in California, unless you get a ticket for "non-correctable" illegal engine modifications, then I think you pay a gross polluter fine (somewhere around $600) and wait to see if the state sends you a smog letter before your car is 6 years old.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...

I'm talking specifically about passing visual inspection AND smog... So a forced induction setup won't work unless you can make it invisble. (aside from TRD supercharger)

Hmm, if you do increase your compression ratio, what happens to your level of pollution? I would assume your cat would have a shorter life. Does CARB measure concentration or qty? I"m guessing it's Parts Per Million.
