Default Going turbo in 2 weeks, few questions!

Hey eveyone,

I read these forums a lot and do a lot of searching. So much information that it is hard to decipher what info I want

One of the things I am questioning is Spark Plugs. Which do I need or which are better than others? or are the stock ones ok?

I will be running the Turbonetics Stage 1 for the Auto Tranny.

zpi uses ngk iridium spark plugs and nology hotwires. at least that is what the description says

The rule is 1 step colder spark plugs per 100hp.

Stock plugs are some of the best plugs made. Just gap to .035

I just got some NGK Iridium BKR7's in yesterday from paul over at dezod. Gonna be running them with my dezod kit.

Pre-gapped at .040, stock gap!


I'd recommend these.

Hit up Paul_Dezod for a set.

Yea, I have nology hotwires already on my stock plugs.

So who else feels that the stock plugs are fine as long as regapped?

Denso IK24's here. Don't know if I'll regap them to .40 or not. That's up to the installer.

Stock plugs are fine but it's safer to use colder plugs to help avoid detonation. If I had a serious turbo setup, I would gap the plugs between .026 or higher until it doesn't misfire.

i had some issues with rpms dropping and actually stalling my engine before i changed out my plugs. I have one step colder ngk iridiums..

I put in my BKR7's today and noticed a very intresting sticker on the valve cover. It stated:

-Use Iridium plugs
-Do NOT re-gap plugs

You can use different pulgs and can re gap them. Reason it says that because your not Forced inducted.

stock plugs are fine......we have ran 12's on 99cent pplugs from wal mart before....The iridiums are the best but do not get to hung up on plugs. Copper plugs get the job done and are a lot cheaper. Nologoy's are worth every penny when you get into 300+whp applications.

I wouldn't recommend running on copper plugs. Even the stock plugs are Iridium. It says right on the Valve cover - Iridium plugs only.

"Colder" plugs dissipate the heat of the combustion faster. The firing end of the plugs do not heat up as fast.

Higher compression ratios (Aka FI - Turbo & Superchargers) will raise the temperature of the engine cylinders and the tip of the spark plugs. To help prevent pre-ignition/detonation, and to add longer life to the engine, you run a colder spark plug (as well as higher octane fuel, etc).
