HKS BOV Adjustment

HKS BOV Adjustment
I just finished installing my greddy turbo kit this weekend and I need to know how to adjust the HKS SSQ BOV. I don't see a screw for any adjustment for the valve and I am hearing fluttering from my intake. Which I am assuming that the charge air is going back and the BOV is not bleeding enough air. I did buy the BOV from Dezod couple weeks ago and the instructions is all in japanese.

Use a 10mm closed wrench to loosen the nut on the back of the BOV. Once you loosen it, you can screw the bolt in a little bit more to stiffen the diaphram. After adjusting, tighten the 10mm nut again.
Keep in mind, a larger turbo at low boost will flutter under less aggressive driving conditions. If you make the peak boost, then get off the gas right away, it dhousl just psshhhh... You can adjust it until you find what you like though. I used to adjust my civic all the time.

I thought there should be a nut back there but on mine there isn't one. There is no hole back there to put a nut or screw behind it. It doesn't make any sense to not have an adjustment screw back there. Did I get a defective one? Thanks Joe

Yeah.. I don't have that black screw in the back like the one in the pic. My bov even doesn't have a hole to put a screw in there. I will take a pic of mine and post it up here shortly.

I just got in touch with Paul. HKS did change their BOV design to save money. Hence our sale price of $185. They kept th design the same, but ditched the adjustment screw for future models. The link below shows the recent price drop they had. I also noticed you have a S/C. S/Cs will flutter any BOV of that type because you do not make enough boost under normal driving for that BOV to really do much. At redline with WOT, you will hear a pssh, but for everything else it would definately flutter. The TiAL would do the same thing. So in the end, nothing's wrong with your setup, that's just how a s/c sounds when you put a BOV like that on it.

No Sorry... I have the Greddy Turbo kit. So there isn't any way to adjust the bov? So is this flutter I am hearing, isn't it bad for the compressor wheel? Currently, I am not pushing the turbo hard until I install some other parts and get it tuned. Thanks again Joe for your help.

Also after reading the link you sent Joe, looks like the small valve is not doing its job properly to vent the air in my pipe. Did HKS change all their SSQ bov without the adjustment screw?

Sorry I looked quickly and when I saw the stainless manifold I thought "alphawerks header" lol...
You're not doing any damage to the compressor by having a flutter. It just doesn't sound as "cool" as the traditional bov sound. What boost level you running at? Does it only flutter at low boost and not at WOT?
The flutter usually means two things... Either there's no vacuum pulling on the valve to help keep it open, or there isn't enough boost pressure to push the spring open.
Usually it flutters because the BOV is letting out pressure, but because the compressor is still spinning, small amounts of air keep coming out as the compressor loses momentum. Now if you heard one little flutter (maybe 1 or 2 times) and then nothing followed, then I'd say it's not doing it's job properly. But if you hear it fluttering a few times each, it's working fine.
When I switched to the TEA turbo setup my TiAL fluttered a little bit at low boost. High boost gave a turkey gobble lol.
Hope that helps.

Okay, good to hear that the turbo is not being affected by it. The flutter is happening at low boost/ partial throttle, I haven't gone past about 1-2 psi. Not until at least I install the aem wideband in. I was having problems installing the zpi s- pipe, so I put my stock one back in. I should have it in by this coming weekend. Thanks Joe!

Ohhh lol... At 1-2 psi it better flap! Haha... That's not enough boost to really get it to do much no matter what. Even with the adjustment model it wouldn't have changed it for that kind of boost level. Glad to help. Let us know how it runs when you get everything all squared away.
